Anomander Rake (Huge Spoilers inside)

Anomander gave his life to free the KG gate. His life force was the power needed to free it and it sent a message to Mother Dark,' I've sacrificed my life to free the gate and ease our peoples' suffering, will you embrace them now after so long?' She accepted and I think Rake is dead and gone for good otherwise his sacrifice isn't as great or significant.

Of those three the only sacrifice that comes close was the Sheild Anvil's and he was human, Rake was already an ascendant. He's gone for good.

has anyone given a thought to why rake had the eye in his hand. remember aspalar threw the eye to rake before he released the gate. i think this is very significant but i cant figure why.

first, I am so happy i can read this forum again, after finishing TTH
Damn the book was epic!! Anyway, as I understood it, rake sacreficed himself to get the gate to black coral and he had help from mother dark. Afterwards, they were reunited again and as I see it, the mother has returned to the andii. From now on, when they die their spirits will no longer wander but return to mother dark.

Possibly the eye traps his soul like the finnest did with scabandari.
Also a point on the fight. Just realized that whatever the book says about it theres another reason Rake obviously let himself die. If he only wanted to stop Dassem Ultor he could have blasted him into oblivion using his warren without breaking a sweat.
Was reading over again a bit last night, came across something like "A mother and son, apart for so long, entwined in ways too mysterious to fathom" which was the redeemers point of view.

Finally I can comment after finishing reading it.
There seemed to b a lot of things that don't seem to make sence. But with Anomander Rake its hard to tell, as throughout the book he has done things that have not made sense to other people, and only much later they understand why he did what he did then (e.g. Gothos and many more).
Rake seems very much dead. We now know that each god has to deal with their dead, and therefore one must wonder if they will need to create a place that their dead can go to or whether they will just send them to Hood's realm. Now I don't think when the Tiste have died in the past they have gone to Hood's Date. If mother Dark accepts Rake and all the Tiste Andii who have died, then she will likely draw all the souls into her and maybe send her dead to a realm of dead of her own making.
I always got the impression before TtH that Paran would play a large part in the breaking of Dragnipur, but he didn't.
Aspsa'lar giving the eye to Rake could be important, but I guess only time will tell.

The eye was obviously Toc's.
Rake received the eye from Apsalar knowing that he could draw on the power of the Wolves, kinda like Quick Ben and Talamandas.
After his body was obliterated, Rake will use Toc's eye and use it as a guide to take him back to Wu and take over Toc's body, then usurp the Gods of War.
This will happen. I know it will.

Or he just wanted an addition to his collections of eyes.

God damn I just finished this book and.....wow.
The bit about the mother and son being together....weird. Rake seems to be even more legendary and epic now, in the world of Burn, than before. Didn't think that was possible.

I wonder if Rake had died among his own people whether they would have buried him or not. Nimander and co seems pretty unsentimental in their view towards the flesh that a Tiste Andii once inhabited. That could just be the way the disspirrited Bluerose Andii think about death, but I dont recall that Rake's Tiste Andii had any rituals concerning death either. Infact Orfantal was just left to rot for all we know!
On a sidenote if this is the general view of the Andii towards death then the burial of the BB has just become an even more grand gesture made by Rake. To put aside thousands of years of indifference to honour the BB speaks volumes.

I doubt it. The Andii may mourn the soul...but not the body.
Rake's honoring of the BB's was truly amazing. To put them in his people's former home and send them out like that....yeah....ridiculously amazing.

I'm hoping Rake will be back, but in a more abstract, passive and god-like form. Any return of the arse-kicking Son of Darkness we know and love would belittle his fairly epic death imo.
So, new King of High House Dark maybe? With MD as Queen, and Spinnock stepping into the vacant slot of Knight after his excellent showing against Kallor?

And what about Ruin? Does he not count? Spinnock would serve as Soldier of Dark better in my opinion.

I think any return would belittle his death. It's why I was so annoyed by the return of Itkovian, and Brys, and WJ. It's a weakness of SE's, that he keeps spoiling epic deaths by bringing people back.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

The return of WJ was fine, hes dead still.
The return of Itkovian is fine, hes a god.
The return of Brys though.........thats unforgiveable at the moment. He had such a perfect tragic death, and to bring him back when he did nothing in RG? Hull should have been brought back instead.

That's what a few people have said, but they're still... there. For all intents and purposes they might as well be alive, seeing as they're showing up and functioning in the plot.

Hrm yeah, I like that idea too. Although Ruin seems rather... volatile compared to the other Tiste Andii and maybe a bit of a loose cannon with his own agenda. Whether that would be a problem or not, I have no idea; the specifics of what qualifies someone for a position in a high house are wide and varied it seems.
There's no denying Ruin totally kicks arse though, and he fights with two longswords which is worth a few bonus points in my book
