It may be that all her actions are intended to thwart the plans of others.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

I put it in my signature.
Kallor Dragonslayer!
The leader, his audience still,
considered their scholarly will.
He lowered his head
and with anguish he said,
"But how will we teach them to kill?"

Is there any significance that I missed in the name "Tufty"? Because if not, I thought the scene was funny... but not that funny.

Quote

'Sad truth,’ Kruppe said – his audience of none sighing in agreement – ‘that a tendency towards verbal excess can so defeat the precision of meaning. That intent can be so well disguised in majestic plethora of nuance, of rhythm both serious and mocking, of this penchant for self-referential slyness, that the unwitting simply skip on past – imagining their time to be so precious, imagining themselves above all manner of conviction, save that of their own witty perfection.' Sigh and sigh again.

When I read this I found it to be very important for the overall narrative goals of SE's and in a way it's a defense against anticipated criticism. I even ended up quoting it in my review, and I rarely quote in reviews.

It would be hard to pull a seperate quote, but the standoff between Kruppe and Pust was brilliant.

In Karsa's lips, that would be: "Too many words." And both Karsa and Kruppe are right, and Steven Erikson is right for having Kruppe say that, and yet, on he goes. You have to acknowledge that, in general, the very message Kruppe attempts to deliver could be delivered in far fewer words, and what he's doing is simply an artistic weave of the english language in order to glamorize his message; no other purpose.

While what you say is true, SE isn't writing an epic fantasy series in the fewest words possible. He's not just telling a story here. He's not doing what's been done a hundred times before.

SE has some (well a lot) of clear thematic goals that are really what he seems to find most interesting and seem to be the reason he keeps writing. It's not about the plot - this is clear from all the time-line troubles, inclusion of unrelated subplots, the rapid writing and resulting inconsistencies, etc. It's the thematic aims that keep him going, and these goals are getting better and more powerful. His wrting approach for TtH that has so turned off many readers around here works because of the these thematic goals - I found it to be brilliant. And it wouldn't have worked in brevity.

1) Traveller and Karsa and Samar Dev

Samar Dev - He is not just being critical, he intends to destroy it. Civilization I mean. The whole thing, from sea to sea. When Karsa Orlong is done, not a single city in the world will remain standing, isn't that right Toblakai?

Karsa - I see no value in modest ambitions witch.

Traveler finally spoke - I dislike cities

2) After a page of internal dialogue for Seerdomin at the end of all the "drama". He understood one thing "Heads roll downhill"

'You damned fool,' he whispered at the fast receding Eleint. 'All of you, damned fools.' Bless you, bless you all. - Kallor

Best moment in the book:

"The miracle of hindsight is how it transforms great military geniuses of the past into incompetent idiots, and incompetend idiots of the present into great military geniuses. There is the door, and be sure to take all your pompous second-guessing delusions with you..."

Tufty certainly had me laughing long and hard...

"The bhokarala sit in a clump, exchanging wedding gifts." also really tickled me, for some reason.

page 339:

Quote

All three men facing her fervently shook their heads at that, while Cutter sat head in hands.
Sulty arrived to slam down a thick-based dusty clay bottle and two more goblets. 'Three councils, Kruppe!'
Kruppe set three silver coins into her hand without a whimper.

Brilliant they were all speechless even Kruppe, had me cracking up!

Have rep good sir, I loved that bit as well. I can just imagine Cutter sitting with his head in his hands because he knows what is about to come from Scillara while the other men are just stunned by her openness (is that even a word?)

Karsa and Traveller had some good conversations. I liked the one about Bairoth Gild and Delum Thord.

Some priceless ones above, "...turn it around." wrecked me, "I shall call him Tufty." positively left me in stitches... the exchange ending with Trav's "I dislike cities." was just one of many from the Karsa-Samar-Trav bits that i loved.

Two others in my head at the moment...:

Rake to Dassem re Hood: "....come and get him." This was like that bit in 300, only cooler.

And, Duiker re Fisher: "The poet is immortal."

That one brought me up short - there was SO MUCH possible meaning behind it.

- Abyss, ..."Tufty!".... BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAAHAAAA...

Visualize it carefully. A ravaged, semi-undead Jaghut Tyrant standing in an Azath House while a loud, bloody war rages on in the city beyond - which he's ignoring - holding a stiffly dead white cat ... and joyfully giving it a cute name.

For myself, one of the best lines of the book is when the nameless guard that Hood later resurrects is initially described in more detail - namely, that he's selflessly compassionate, and honestly interested in doing what's right.

paraphrased from memory:

Quote

"... Imagine a world without such souls.
Yes, it should have been harder to do."

"...Therefore I must be more ...direct, and oh how I dislike being direct. When next you see Anomander, tell him this from me: he chose wisely. Each time, he chose wisely. Tell him, then, that of all whom I ever met, there is but one who has earned my respect, and he is that one." - Gothos

The section where Kallor kills Orfantal, hits the ground, gets up and walks on to Darujistan, and ends - along with the chapter - with Kallor was great.

'Oh crap, he's been grabbed by a dragon, he's dead no- wut. No, wut. Orfantal's dead? In a paragraph? OH SHI-"

Also, Hood accepting a rebuke from Whiskeyjack was interesting.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

It's not likely...it's not as if cats are rare creatures or anything. ;)
