Just watched a few episodes of Ray Mears' Extreme Survival. Fantastic show, where he gives a demonstration of how to survive in a particular environment, while also recounting some amazing real life situations where people actually had to put these skils to use.

My favourite episode is the one set in Belarus, where you meet some of the partisans that evaded the Nazis for 3 years by hiding in the forest there. They managed to hide and feed over 1000 untrained people, while being actively hunted.

But what i really like about the show is that the host, Ray Mears is so low key about things. There's no "look at me" business going on. If you come across any of his shows on tv, they're definitely worth watching.

I've been watching Psych today. Don't know what to make of it.

It's a funny show and the plot is intelligent enough. I just hate the "pretend to be a medium" angle. Generally stories with the plot hinging on the information being left out/lying just to get the characters into silly situations pisses me off.

It also has a strong similarity with Monk... which I certainly prefer.

I finally got around to watching Weeds, after hearing great things from so many people. I'm six episodes into season 1; it's pretty good. It's entertaining, but I don't know if I'd go and rave about to people. Maybe/hopefully it gets better as the season progresses and the plot thickens. I imagine it does.

I love shows like this. I've never heard of this one though.

@Slum: It does noting but keep getting better

RLY - As far as i know, there were 3 seasons of Extreme Survival, and then he also did some standalone projects.

There is a great one called "Real Heroes of Telemark", which is about some Norwegians being parachuted back into Norway during WW2 to try and sabotage a Nazi facility. Of course, things didn't go to plan and these guys had to survive in ridiculous conditions for ages. In this show, they try and recreate some of the conditions and tell the story.

He also has a new show called Walkabout, which is set in Australia but I haven't had a chance to see it yet. Hoping it will be on NZ tv sometime soon.

Just bought Season2 of Life on Mars. Looking forward to having something good to watch.

Hopefully Discovery channel picks it up, or maybe the History channel. Then I could see it. It sounds interesting.

I posted this on The Wire thread already, but here goes as well.

The duo behind the Wire, David Simon and Ed Burns, have made a 7-part miniseries called Generation Kill that starts on July 13th. It's based on a book by a reporter who was with the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion in 2003.

The Wire is the best tv-series that I've seen so I've got pretty high expectations for this as well.

Cheers for the info Vaiski. I look forward to checking it out. Loved THE WIRE so i'll have pretty high hopes too.

@ RLY - about Ray Mears, i did a quick look and there are some clips of his shows on youtube, which obviously isn't ideal to watch but should give an idea. here is a link to a short clip of one of him when he did little snippets on a BBC program called Countryfile. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=Sn9GmxWvABk the clip is ~4mins, and about 9mb, so not too bad for a sample (it's about how to make fire by friction).
But you'll get an idea of his low key manner, and simple informative style.
His own series were more interesting cos they mix real life survival stories with demonstrations of the skills required. The related links on youtube will probably show you some of his Extreme survival series as well.

Indeed. I haven't seen an episode of Mad TV that wasn't a rerun in years. I wonder how the show fares...is it still on FOX on Saturdays?

Mad TV's still running on Fox on Saturday.

They've got at least seven solid to very good comics. Bobby Lee of course is my favorite, but it seemed like the show shifted into a higher gear once Nicole Parker came onto the show. They've been kicking Saturday Night Live's ass just about every week for years now.

SNL sucks. It seems like they make an effort to be unfunny. Mad TV is so much better.

I'm up to the episode of Weeds where the Armenian neighbors get busted by Nancy's DEA boyfriend/husband. I gotta say, it has sucked me in. Kevin Nealon and that Andy guy are hilarious as a couple of stoners. What's the deal w/ that DEA guy?

I can't resist a good spoilerage, and since you asked for it...

...he's the final cyclon. Its a huge tie-in, the survivors find earth and Nancy hooks them all up, then retires.

So that's why Andy was so spooked by the military thing.

On a side note: do not, and I repeat, do not look up a picture of Jenji Kohan. I was trying to figure out if Jenji was a he or a she. I have my answer: Jenji is a woman and she is not attractive.

Geesh, man! I didn't actually want you to spoiler it. I was just wondering out loud. :D

Now. What the hell is up with that guy? He's got some kind of agenda, that's for sure.

Don't tell me! I'll find out soon enough, I think. I'm almost done with Season 2.
