We just started Murderbot and so far it's quite good. Definitely hits the same tone as the first book.

Was wondering if anyone had started this, think I might watch first couple eps Sunday.

TURNING POINT: THE VIETNAM WAR on Netlflix...man I thought I knew about the Vietnam War before, but this deep dive really opened my eyes to what happened, what led to it, and why America getting involved was misguided and wrong...just a really great doc series. Not QUITE Ken Burns level, but close.

I finished Slow Horses and WOW that was a phenomenal show. May have to keep Apple TV until the summer when season 5 is due to come out. I'm planning on watching Severance next but I'm worried I won't enjoy it because it's not Slow Horses!

Gary Oldman was brilliant, of course, but just about everyone was superb (Hugo Weaving??!)

I think on consideration my favourite character was Standish. My least favourite was Marcus because he was a bell end and the architect of his own downfall!

Shirley. Dander. Best character by a country mile for me.

I mean yeah, she's ace. Not top for me but definitely up there. Honestly I really love Taverner in a "man she is ruthless and awful but she is so entrancing to watch!" Kristin Scott Thomas owns every scene she's in!

When she and Oldman are in a scene together you KNOW you're going to get a scenery chewing scene from both of them.

This was fantastic throughout and wildly informative. Well WELL worth your time.

Now I've moved onto the previous TURNING POINT series THE BOMB & THE COLD WAR.

^^^Not to be confused with Turning Point USA, which is unrelated.

This week I've given into nerd peer pressure and started watching Taskmaster. It's pretty good. Which is to say I'm already halfway through Series 4. I don't have time for this! And yet...
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I'm in episode 2 and we went through the Rosenbergs and into McCarthy....and I noticed something perhaps notable...McCarthy's right hand lawyer was Roy Cohn....yes the same Roy Cohn that advised a young Donald Trump to pretty much be and act the way he currently does...in the Army VS McCarthy hearings (where McCarthyism started to fall apart) McCarthy calls Missouri Senator Stuart Symington "Sanctimonious Stu"...and pat of me would put VERY good money on the nickname originating from Cohn. His bread and butter was nicknaming opponents to make them easy media targets for soundbites...the connection to Trumps constant need to come up with childish bully nicknames is unmistakable.

Anyways. Interesting.

Also it will never not blow my mind that Klaus Fuchs, who LITERALLY took the Fat Man plans from Los Alamos secret labs and gave them directly to Stalin, got 14 years in prison for his espionage, served 9 and then lived out his days in Germany until 1988, and yet Joel and Ethel Rosenberg were given the death penalty, reportedly to scare them into talking and when they didn't were executed...like...my gods.

Fuck, Alan Dulles was a psychopathic evil piece of shit. Talk about poisoning the well with a whole wing of the American apparatus from the ground up.

I thought it was a workplace comedy going because of Adam Scott's presence.

Boy was I fucking surprised!
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Amazon has canceled its Wheel of Time series

[...] right after The Wheel of Time's third season concluded, showrunner Rafe Judkins said that when when he and his team were first shopping the series around to studios, they ultimately chose Amazon as a production partner because it "felt like a place where they do want to invest in shows for the long term."

"There are not a lot of places doing that anymore," Judkins said. "For Wheel of Time, it's really important for us to be somewhere that does want to invest in shows for the long term and not just for the splash and leave."

https://www.theverge...f-time-canceled

Huh, apparently the third season being better didn't bring back enough viewers... or did it actually lose viewers over the course of the third season? "Oh no this isn't cheesy crap anymore, I'm out"

Makes me wonder what the figures are for The Rings of Shite.

The Rings of Gilded Garbage have Bezos armor, I'd guess.

Quote

Jeff Bezos says 'The Rings of Power' goes beyond turning a profit for Amazon: 'Our hearts are in it'.

https://www.syfy.com...nd-making-money

Besides, they've got so much narrative still to get through! Not at all like WoT...

Quote

My Theory about Rings of Power is that it was written by Jeff Bezos himself

It's the only thing that makes sense to me. Why else would the show be so nonsensical and badly written while also having such a massive budget.

https://www.reddit.c...is_that_it_was/

(lol, probably not... but maybe they'll let Amazon's AI start writing most of it? Then Bezos can finish off the script! Or even better---have AI generate the whole thing, actors and video and music? That might actually be an improvement...)

It's like a Bezos megayacht. Or a Blue Origin human mission (/ sacrifice) to Mars (only ever so slightly cheaper...).

[Edit: almost forgot to mention... been watching Letterkenny. You Canadians finally make sense to me!]
