Wrapped up Season 4 of True Detective. While i really enjoyed the reveal, overall it was not a great series. Decentish. 5.5 rolling oranges/10.

3 shows in the To Watch Pile. Loudermilk, Orphan Black, and Counterpart. I told the ole lady she can choose.

I finished True Detective s4 last night and I liked a lot of it, but I felt it leant too heavily into "well it might be ghosts!" and I felt that didn't sit with the premise of the show somehow. I'm glad I watched it and there were some truly scary moments, but the ending didn't quite land right to me.

The first two episodes of Shogun came out yesterday. I only got through the first episode so far, but it's really really good. The first episode is pretty violent though, fair warning.

Yes I loved it! They've obviously taken care to capture the feel and texture that the book conveys. Such a richly crafted show that send to follow the book pretty closely from what I remember.

Holy shit shogun is great. Love that book. I wish they had more than 10 episodes though, I feel 20 would be perfect.

I'm just glad they haven't tried to cram it all into like 6 episodes. Everything so far seems to me that they've really worked hard to honour the source material.

Episodes 5 through 8 of Three Pines weren't nearly as good (in terms of hokeyness, writing, acting, and sociological interest), but they were watchable, decently well-paced, and mildly interesting. I did lol at a few unintentionally humorous points. Ends with a cliffhanger, but got canceled after one season. I think the cliffhanger probably doesn't happen in the books, since it relates to a show-only plotline, but IDK.

[Edit: It's almost as if the actors realize the quality of the writing has declined and so descend into lazy apathy and self-parody.]

Have you guys watched Mr Inbetween?

It's an Aussie show about a criminal who does dark violent shit for a living but also just wants to live a nice normal family life.

It's sort of like Barry. Only good, and funny.

I like how low key and sorta realistic the depiction of violence is. Just a guy doing his job very efficiently.

I have this on my watchlist, I may push it forward as I'm looking for something else to watch.

It's a sequel series to The Inbetweeners?
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I like too think of it as a spin-off from Neighbors.

It's been so long you forgot what thread you were in!

(It's pretty good.)
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Masters of the Air

Continues to dissapoint. There is no coherent narrative to this series. The teasers at the end of every episode make me less interested in the episode to come not more. One moment we are following the bombers, now its the tuskegee airmen for all of ten minutes and now its the prisoner of war camps. You have to give me more than 15 minutes with a character to care about him. Its like a commitee came together and couldnt decide whose storyline was best so they agreed to try do them all.

We're watching The Bear. Anyone else? Series 1 was very good. Series 2 is a bit up itself, however I defy anyone with a genuinely dysfunctional family to get through the Christmas dinner episode without starting to feel intensely anxious. I believe the younglings nowadays call it "triggered".

The Bear is really friggin good.

You’re right though, Season 2 starts slowish, but the last 4 are awesome.

SHOGUN.

This is good tv.

Indeed. The third episode was brilliant! So much detail and craftsmanship good into each shot. The feeling of the show build up of pressure between all the different factions is just great storytelling.

I'm impressed, and I say this as someone who has read the book and watched the original tv series multiple times each.

Dang this is such compelling storytelling. Episode 4 is a treat. I was grinning so much when he finds out he now has a house and a consort. Marvelous casting all around!
