What's your job?

I was doing social media photo and video work for the wildlife park, as well as doing some PR photo work for them as well (i actually finished up there last week). I used to work for the park many years ago in their education office, which is part of why they took me on for the photo stuff. I was basically trying to build up a catalogue of proper publication standard images for all the species in the park, which was a challenge.

I originally trained in zoology, and have worked in the sciences for many years, but more recently I decided on a career change, and did a film/tv production course, and will hopefully be able to produce my own stuff in the coming years. I'd love to be able to combine the science and the film stuff, but I'd need a lot more experience for that. Wildlife photography I can manage, wildlife videography is a different beast (pardon the pun) which requires some serious kit that I can't afford yet.

Watched the first couple episodes of CNN's History of Comedy documentary series. Pretty good. The title is a little misleading (so far) -- the first episode pays a little lip service to Vaudeville and Burlesque but essentially starts at Lenny Bruce -- so it's not really an exhaustive Ken Burns style thing. That said, the first episode is pretty good: Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, and Red Foxx are the focus and each given their due. I suppose the premise of it is progress & regress via edginess. The second episode is pretty great: an overview of women in standup comedy. It's rather white-centric (Moms Mabley gets a couple minutes, but that's all for POC really), but it's CNN, so that's to be expected I suppose.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

You guys ever watch The Weapon Hunter on the Smithsonian Channel? Oh man, if you're a war/military history buff, this show will be right up your alley.

Season 2 episode 1 featured a rebuild of a Vietnam era Gun Truck and with fully functional M60 Machine Gun and twin M2 Browning .50 caliber Machine Guns. Man oh man that was a lot of fun to watch in action.

Started watching The OA with Mrs Tiste. It was... weird! But intriguing. Definitely going to keep watching.

Also watched the first episode of The Get Down. Very interesting show, the cast all seem to nail their respective roles. There is a slight surreal edge to it as well, which I like!

So I know I'm REALLY late to the party but thanks to Christmas, Valentine's Day and then "got a bonus I can spring for this", we acquired seasons 4,5 and 6 of Game of Thrones and have been binging it straight through from the start since right around Christmas. My wife and I had seen through S3 but lost HBO (F COMCAST!!) and I refused to add to my bill for one show. I had enjoyed the show to that point but it bothered me less at the time to lose it than I though it might. But I gave my wife S4 for Christmas (we had the first 3 already) and thought we'd start catching up. She and I have both read the first 3 books (and love them) but went no farther when it became clear that Martin writes slower than a glacier moves.

This show is Excellent. They seem to have spared no expense I can think of. The CGI on this show, most especially the dragons, equals anything I have seen in any movie I can think of. I actually think its equal to, if not better than, the CGI of Smaug in the Hobbit movies. The acting has been stellar in almost every case. The duel between Martell and the Mountain was very well done, I thought, to the point that I want to go back and watch it again. While I tried to avoid major spoilers for the show, I have seen a few references to the Dorne "chapter" of S5 as an example of a show going a bit off the rails. I can see how that could've gotten rather annoying for those watching week to week, waiting for each episode. I think being able to binge 2 to 3 episodes at a time made that much easier to take. The bastards battle of late S6 reminded me so strongly of the first time I saw Braveheart in the theater and the grimness, intensity and rush in the blood that I felt at that first battle scene. Extremely impressive. And last but not least, a gyrfalcon got at least a solid minute of screen time! The final 2 (shorter, apparently) seasons are going to be epic. Unfortunately, I still don't have HBO. But we're creeping closer to cutting ourselves free of cable and going to all streaming services of some combination and maybe we can pick GoT that way. Actually bummed there's no more to catch up on!

There's a whole series of threads for the show in the GRRM subforum if you wanna check out everyone's reactions/theories week to week! Lots of red herrings!

But I largely agree with you. Rewatching Season 5 on disc, so I could binge it, really made the bad Dorne (and occasionally bad Meereen) stuff fly by.

One thing I've wondered about the short seasons is if they are going to still have the "10 episode budget" and use it to even greater effect.

I saw some GoT pages for individual seasons but it looked like they had book spoilers so I didn't delve too deep. Foolish perhaps, as the show will spoil plenty I haven't read but, hopefully, the books will still be worth reading.

Great question about the shortened season/full season budget. I would certainly hope so. I also hope the episodes will be a minimum of an hour each. The show is still a huge success for HBO, I assume?

Yah, show is still a money-maker for sure. Both 7 and 8 will be short, BK, and 7 isn't gonna air till the summer. Wouldn't be surprised if they're shaping the arcs of both seasons at once to at least some degree.

I thought only the last was going to be the short one? Shouldn't 7 be coming soon? I've seen no ads for it but they have always been Mar or April.

I was looking into that this morning since we just watched the S6 finale last night. What I saw said 13 more total eps, 7 episode season and a 6 ep season. And S7 is rumored to be starting no sooner than June this time. Something about they needed to film in some greyer, colder weather at some of the locations.

So, I've thought that Season 2 of THE MAGICIANS looked really cool, so I've bought S1 on iTunes and will be giving it a chance (I could not get into the books). Hopefully it's good.

It takes about half the season to get past how annoying and whiny Quentin is, and to get good. In that regard, it's very true to the book.

So I tried to watch Season 1 of Black Mirror and it didn't click.

The first episode was ok, though it strained credulity.

The second and third - basically dystopian sci-fi what-ifs.

I couldn't relate to the show at all.

Oh man disappointing I flipping love that show! The whole premise is basically a dark reflection on society and it's connection with technology. It's great!
