Stranger Things - anyone else watching this? It's brilliant so far. 8 ep Netflix series.

It's a throw back to the great films of the 80s generation. Definitely a tribute to them.

Group of 4 kids get wrapped up in something and shit goes down, I won't spoil anything - don't watch the trailer and go in fresh, you'll enjoy it more.

I'm 4 eps in and wishing I started it earlier so i could binge the full 8.

Just came here to post about this show! Amazing! Loving it as well. Only on ep 3 so far, but can't stop binge-watching!

Absolutely, I've been watching it today, just finished episode 4. Holy shit this shit is intense! It definitely has both my thumbs pointing way up there!
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Woah careful with the spoilers lads! Not that far in!

What ep did you get up to? I might be able to get another one in tonight, was hoping to finish the last 4 in a binge but stupid life got in the way.

That's what I am loving about the show, though the leads are children, when it starts to go off it gets you on edge.

Loved the ending of ep 4:

Finished Season 1 of STRANGER THINGS last night! Absolutely amazing start to finish. The tension and excitement never lets up.

spoilers to the end.

Spoiler

Netflix needs to greenlight S2 now! Also, apparently Guillermo Del Toro and Stephen King are both raving about the show. That's a solid endorsement.

I watched the first 3 episodes of Stranger Things.

I love everything about that show except the actual story. I can't put my finger on it specifically but it just seems sort of boring. A generic amalgamation of the many different themes borrowed from the 80s. Like somebody smashed together Firestarter, It, Stand by me, Twin Peaks, ET and more.

The story is so familiar that I could probably guess what it will end with right now - Spooky girl probably summoned bad monster, government tries to capture it, kids try to stop it, spooky girl saves the day or some bullshit, sherif dies protecting mom.

When that is said there is a deep feeling of nostalgia I get from watching this show. It feels like coming home. A calmer, more safe time, when cops were trustworthy, kids played outside until the sun went down and the government were running experiments on children for the sake of the Free World.

I especially love the music in this show, that synthesizer intro with the Stephen King font is just amazing.

I managed to get it finished up too - it was awesome wasn't it, the pacing was brilliant all the way through.

I found this interview from the directors - take a read if you've watched the series:

Pretty much covers anything I could say or speculate on haha.

But one thing:

I need more!

That is why it was great for me, it hit all the perfect notes giving you the nostalgia feeling for some of the great films of my youth. It has been a while since we had something like this came out, Super 8 was probably the most recent and whilst I enjoyed that, I didn't think it was great and it didn't have that spark, this does.

Just roll with it and enjoy, aye parts feel similar but that is a good thing for me.

edit:

Just to add that my earlier post, I watched up to episode 4 and speculated... pretty much everything I wondered was answered in the next episode ha, typical.

Finished Stranger things. Yeah, I never really got into that story. Far too thin for my liking. More presentation than actual depth. I think my main problem is that I never learned enough about what was going on.

If they make more seasons I wonder where the show goes. Build on the established "flip side" universe place? Or something new happens borrowing from other stories?

I thought Hell on Wheels was another biker show. The railroad premise sounds more interesting I guess. What is the show like? Sort of like There will be blood or?

Ok, finished Stranger Things, and more or less loved it. It did feel very TV sometimes -- not in a bad way, but definitely in a noticeable way. Especially a few of the pre-credits scenes. But that lent itself to the throwback nature. And it really was a throwback -- not a winking nostalgia fest, not an old idea with new tricks -- it just felt (aside from CGI) like a really well made product of the era it was aping. And like Super 8, it did include some of the strained-dad-relationship stuff Spielberg fetishizes, but unlike Super 8 it didn't screw that stuff up. Also like Super 8, the kids were actually pretty great and believable. Nobody quite reached Elle Fanning level superb, but Mike and El came close.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Man, the child actors in that show were incredible. Elle was particularly great, but also the kid with the underdeveloped teeth played really well.

Yah definitely. She's got such a great face, conveying so much just with expression. Reminded me a bit of Melissa McBride.

For the record, when I say it's not a winking nostalgia fest, the emphasis was on the 'winking' -- it definitely is a nostalgia-fest, just not obnoxious about it.
Here's a good article on the film connections (comments section is good too). Spoilers abound for whole series:

I'm kinda hoping they do Ameican horror story type ARC with stranger things... Have a bunch of seasons end the in a similar fashion and don't give you everything

Tie all them together with a movie-format story
