It's certainly pretty dumb that just because it has swords and violence in it, it gets labelled as a GoT copy. I've seen several headlines along the lines that it is 'made for the GoT audience. '

It's probably true that the popularity of GoT meant that this got made into a tv show, but it doesn't have any comparison otherwise. Anyone that has read Cornwell knows that he likes to ditch the flashy movie idea of history for a more down to earth, gritty REAL approach, and the show, as far as I can tell, is trying to reflect that. It's definitely more along the Vikings line, anyway.

It could almost be a successor to Vikings history-wise, since it involves the invasion of Britain by Ragnar's sons.

I haven't read the books for a while but it all looked like events I remember.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Oh god. Gilmore Girls annoys me sooooo badly. Partly because I can't not watch it when it is on and partly because of Rory's HORRIFIC taste in men. Dean was a total wuss, Jess was hardly ever nice to her and having a boyfriend who calls you "Ace" is the most patronising thing in the history of being patronised. I'm angry just thinking about it. Totally going to watch the new shows though because I need to know if Lorelai and Luke end up together. And if Rory ended up trapped in the abusive relationship she deserves.

This burst of ambivalent anger marks you as a Jess.

So, now that Supergirl has officially aired, I decided to give it another go and watch the pilot one more time. Y'know, just to see if I was being unreasonable or unfair the first time around. And to see if the production company has listened to the criticism the leaked pilot received.

Nope. It is still insultingly bad. Again, I know I'm not really the targeted demographic here, but still, it's really, really bad. I think, though not sure, that there were a few differences, but nothing remotely redeemable.

so...NO!
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Most of the phenomenalness comes from the awesome music, by Fever Ray. The whole album that "If I Had a Heart" is on is awesome:

Edit: also, I second that you should watch Downton Abbey

Yeah, I'm not even giving it that much of a chance. I'll wait till 5 or 6 eps have dropped before giving it a fresh go...and even then it's got an uphill battle with me.

I'm a big Supergirl fan (collect the comics), and therefore I'm thinking I'm at least included in the targeted demographic...if not the main demographic...and I think that Laura Vandervoort's 4 or 5 eps playing Kara on SMALLVILLE flies circles around this entire pilot. They haven't gotten the Kara character down at all.

Anyone watching QUANTICO? Is it any good?

I watched the pilot and it seemed well enough done, but i haven't caught any of the next 4 episodes yet, and wondering whether to bother.

The Smallville Supergirl plot was horrible. It was bad in every way possible yet it still manages to be better than the new Supergirl iteration.

EXACTLY. At the very least the Smallville Kara has the personality of the character as what it should be....this whole need for CBS to make her basically be a Superman allegory (working at a media magazine or whatever, hot co-worker crush, nerdy friend) just basically throws out anything that makes Kara interesting.

I don't think we're going to agree that Smallville Kara had the personality that Supergirl should have. She started out sort of okay, but it didn't just go downhill, it plummeted into a sinkhole.

The traits that make Kara and Supergirl what she is are pretty easy to nail down: Homeless, parents dead, planet gone (all of which Superman has too)...but add to that out of time (she was sent BEFORE Kal-El, but arrived after him in our time), no surrogate family (the closest she has is Mar and Pa Kent...and they never really take her in), discovers her powers on her own with no guidance, can't work well with others INCLUDING her cousin (tries out the Teen Titans, Outsiders, JLA, none of which stick), she has an arrogance that needs tempering over time. She's supposed to be a fully grown and realized God the moment she steps out of her ship...with NONE of the tempering Clark has from being able to grow up as a child on earth with human parents. In the comics, it's so bad that she is taken to live on Themiscryra (Wonder Woman's isle home) with other overtly powerful gods.

I think that Kara on Smallville exhibited those simple traits and that Melissa Benoist doesn't even a little bit.

Yeah, Kara's storyline(s) on SMALLVILLE were largely bad...I found her at least to feel like the Comic version of Kara (circa the 2000's anyways). YMMV.

The Superman/Batman Kara Zor-El was sort of well written, at least, she got alot better with time. The following Supergirl was my favourite, discounting the nineties Supergirl who was funny as hell, of the bunch. The Smallville Supergirl showed some personality exactly one time, when she crushed lois' phone, and even then it was the personality of a typical spoiled teenage brat.

The "out of time" argument is the only one in her favour (something this new supergirl doesn't have because she arrived as a young child) But even that didn't really play any kind of significant role in Smallville.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Hmmm, okay. I think that Vandervoort's Kara was as close to my fave Kara (Volume 5, the one created in Batman/Superman by Loeb and Michael Turner, Ian Churchill and continued by Joe Kelly) as we've gotten in live action.

Don't get me wrong, I like that incarnation too, I have a bunch of the comics somewhere. Aside from her first appearance, where she breaks some guys in Gotham, I don't think she started out very well. She did get better though, alot better. I lked her successor better though.

I really liked the Supergirl with the white shirt though, she was funny as fuck.
