Coldplay - Viva La Vida

Wow. After an absolutely effing garbage CD like X & Y, this new one is SO different, and I for one absolutely am digging it.
Some of it sounds like something The Arcade Fire or Psringsteen might have written, other stuff sounds more like classic Parachutes Coldplay and some even goes off on a different tangent altogether. It's eclectic, it's got harder edges and more crunching guitars in spots than you might expect from the boys, and all in all it's a very good listen. So far I love it...and the funny thing is that I didn't expect to love it, I expected more of the same monotonous tripe as X&Y, and colour me completely surprised!
Give it a listen if you're game.
Please Note: I hear that people either LOVE this record or they out and out HATE it. There doesn't seem to be in between. Hehe.

Wait, Coldplay have done something different? You mean THE Coldplay? Are we talking about the same Coldplay? Something different? Seriously? You mean it's not just a repetitive depressing piano riff with Chris Martin moaning over the top of it?
Coldplay? Different?
I might actually check this out!

Yeesh, I hate Coldplay... and they didn't help themselves by being incredably pretentious while promoting this album... I'm more likely to buy the Fratellis' new album, and that's still fairly unlikely.

Yeah, I don't think I could have handled another song like Clocks or Fix Me. I think there's probably only one or two songs that are old recognizable Coldplay and the rest feels like new territory.

I've heard a good portion of the new album on Sirius. Must say I still do and always have hated coldplay. Sounds like the same boring whiney crap to me on the new album.
That said, I don't really care for any other bands of like ilk either. The soft high-pitched breath-singing over top of jangly guitar/piano riffs just irritates the shit out of me. The songs never seem to go anywhere. At most there is a different chord progression (albeit a terribly basic and dull one) for the verse and chorus, repeated about 3 times and then 5 minutes worth of saying the same word over the same riff at progressively higher and whinier pitches.

WEEEEEEELCOME TO DYIIIIIIIIINGGGGG
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Have no fear about me going all wussy soft rock on you, paladin. Though where you got the idea that I was into Blind Guardian from, I don't know...

Fucking pretentious middle-class art school wankers. I hate Chris Martin, he's such a moaney sanctimonious toss-pot. On one hand he goes on about helping the poor and having artistic integrity storming of a BBC Radio 4 interview (wow, rock and roll Chris, maybe for your next trick you could throw a teapot out of the window of the Savoy Grill, or crash a Womens Institute meeting) and the next thing he's on his knees in a back alley sucking Apples i-cock whilst his bland, musically talentless band stand around counting their money like 3 spare fannies at a wedding.
I haven't heard it.

They are - it's all in metal, but I'm not a massive power metal fan. Blind Guardian have some good stuff ("Precious Jerusalem" is excellent) and I have tickets to see Dragonforce this september. But there is way better metal than power metal.

I find this CD rather un-listenable. It just gets on my nerves. Coldplay has always done that though.

It's an okay record, but nothing too outstanding. The only thing that's really different about it is that they have Brian Eno doing some of his knob-twiddling wankery over the top of the songs and that's about it.
A couple of good songs - 'Viva la Vida' is okay, 'Violet Hill' is growing on me but a very weird choice for lead single - and there isn't anything really bad on there (like 'Fix You'), but it's not really a stand-out from their other records. Rush of Blood to the Head is probably still their best album and X&Y was pretty good (love the guitar riff in 'Square One' and the pounding bass on 'White Shadows', whilst the riff on 'Talk' was great, but then since it's a Kraftwerk one you expect it to be).
The new REM album - the last record I bought - is much better.

I never liked colplay until I got this album... It was the soundtrack for me while i was reading GotM, so i think it will be connected to that book for me.

I only can with english music, dutch lyrics (yes, we have that ;-)) are too distracting.
