I think the encyclopedia might help you along somewhat...
http://encylopaediam...ica.pbwiki.com/
Otherwise I don't think there's more to do than peruse what ever thread titles that sound important in the various bookforums.

Hmm... interesting. I think there is something to be said for the power of writing a summary of the kind dolfanuk wants... so here goes:
Anyone feel like adding to that?
Quote
The dramatis personae for Toll the Hounds will see many returning characters converge on the continent of Genabackis. This here be an attempt to summarize where we last met them...
At the end of The Bonehunters, Lady Spite, Mappo Trell, Iskaral Pust, Mogora, Cutter, Baratol Mekhar, and the ever innocent Chaur had just witnessed the meteor storm of jade giants mitigated by Heboric's sacrifice/ intervention.
Speaking of witness, at the end of Reaper's Gale, Karsa Orlong had just choppy chopped Rhulad Sengar - once - and turned down the Crippled God's offer of taking up the cursed sword. He had then departed the CG's pocket warren via portal - presumedly to return to his Teblor people and lead them from obscurity to glory. Waiting for him somewhere out there on Genabackis are the Forkrul Assail that he once freed from a rock prison, and the aftermath of the destruction/ rape he inflicted on other Teblor tribes at the very beginning of his quest...
Nimander Golit, depressed son of Anomander Rake, is leading what remains of the Drift Avalii Tiste Andii looking for his father, and has with him the self-proclaimed herald of Mother Dark - the garroting assassin Clip.
Meanwhile back on Genabackis, the Lord of Dark is based out of Black Coral where Itkovian redeemed the T'lan Imass and the Bridgeburner's met their end. Lady Envy is at large - somewhere, as is the Mortal Sword of Treach, the former caravan guard Gruntle and his K'rul worshipping gal Stonny Menackis.
The Crimson Guard however have left these lands (back to Quon Tali for them), as have the Grey Swords led by Anaster Toc and the white face Barghast led by Tool, his sister Kilava and his girlfriend Hetan (all of whom we met on Lether in RG).
Inside the sword Dragnipur, chaos continues to chase after the gate to Darkness and Draconus grows ever more weary and desperate as Rake is proving too merciful to feed the sword the souls it needs .
In Darujhistan, city of blue fire, Kruppe and K'rul still maintain balance. The retired bridgeburners are now running a bar in the old K'rul Belfry. We can assume Murillio and Coll (Cuttern's old friends) are on the nobles council. The T'orrud Cabal has lost many of its members. The Assassin's guild in the city lost its leader Vorcan, and Rallick Nom to the newly created Finnest House of the Azath.
Finally, Shadowthrone and Cotillion continue on their paths of intrigue. Their five remaining hounds of Shadow are on the run from the five remaining Deragoth as they continue to manipulate everyone they can toward their own mysterious ends...

Crokus, the epitomy of fantasy's generic protagonists, the aspining thief turned scorned killer, returns to Darujistan. One of the most central and promising characters is coming full cirkle.
Is there a connection between Crokus and the once Tyrant of Darujistan?
Will we get the full scoop on the Seguleh and the Torruld Cabal and their connection to the Elder title of Shield Anvil?
Will Crokus finally make a play for the hand of Chalice, the girl of his adolescent adoration?

Great summary, Skywalker.
Meanwhile, on Seven Cities, the rebellion has finally been squashed, presumably once and for all. Ganoes Paran, the Master of the Deck, has inherited command for Dejek's Host from the late High Fist.
In the wake of Poliel's plague, a new cult of the Crippled God is gaining strength and numbers under the hypocritially decadent spiritual leadership of Felisin the Younger.

Can anyone expand on...
"witnessed the meteor storm of jade giants mitigated by Heboric's sacrifice/ intervention."
and
"Itkovian redeemed the T'lan Imass "
I am drawing a blank on both, and while I faintly remember the events (okay, maybe not) I know I should. I feel like a bad Malazan fan.
But hey, it's been 2 years and maybe 75 or 100 books since bonehunters?

One or more Jadegiants were heading for Wu, which might not itself had been that big a problem. It's happened before and more are coming. But this time one of the statues hit the moon on it's way, this caused the statue to shatter and perhaps even drag fragments of the moon with it.
Paran sought to ask Mael to absorb the blow with the warren of the sea but somehow ended in front of Hoods gate instead. There he made a deal with Hood. In return for a favor, Hood returned Heborics soul and Treach made Heboric into a Shield Anvil. With the aid of Treach the pain of the millions of souls within the statue was absorbed and the power of the chaotic magic within Heboric made the Ottataral island take worst of the impact of the statues.

At the end of Bonehunters, a storm of Green Jade statues was headed toward Wu. Paran saw it coming and thought to contact Mael so he could swallow them up in the sea so the world would be saved. But Mael had his 'back turned' (presumably because he's off roleplaying as Bugg), and instead Paran got a wrong number - Hood.
Hood kinda-sorta let Heboric's soul out from his realm so he could "give answer" to the jade giants. Heboric stretched out with his huge green hands over otataral island and guided the jade statues into the sea/ abyss.
While all this was going on, Spite and Mappo were on a boat with Iskaral Pust and Mogora, while Cutter, Baratol Mekhar, Chaur, and Scillara were carrying Heboric's cut up body to Otataral Island. The body slipped into the water... Chaur dove after it... Baratol followed... and then some stray meteorites took out their boat. They were eventually rescued by Spite and Co, and Baratol had to revive Chaur (who had a near death drowning experience)
Did that tingle any neurons for ya?
EDIT: Apt beat me to it... how do you get around so fast?

Paran ended up with Hood instead of Mael because of that artist, Ormulogun (or whatever his name is). Paran asked the artist to draw him a card for the Deck pronto, the artist started protesting he couldn't, so Paran decided to draw his own card to get to Mael. Meanwhile, the artist decided he could make a card quickly, and just as Paran was about to dive into the card he'd drawn in the sand, the artist stuck the Hood card under his nose, and he fell into that instead.
Itkovian redeeming the Imass was one of the most powerful scenes in MoI, and no short description could possibly do it justice. He took on all their memories, their entire souls, everything they'd been carrying around for three thousand years...
Edit: Thee hundred thousand years, of course. My bad - I shouldn't type so fast.

that just made me think of something. paran decided to draw his own card to get to mael? mael doesn't even have a card in the deck! where he is, there isnt even warren magic, until recently. now we dont find out if this would have worked but paran seems to think it would.
it just seems that parans power is pretty much limitless. if he can pop in on elder gods whenever he feels the urge... i mean, snap

Elder Gods could logically be represented by the Unalligned. K'rull is an Unalligned. The question is if there is a House of the Sea and would it then be Neruse that was the Queen or would Mael be the king?

Three hundred thousand years... Just to add to the magnitude of the event.
(Although it's probably just a type-o)

The whole point is that he doesn't take souls, he takes on their memories and takes away the pain associated with them (which is what killed him), giving them peace and allowing their souls to pas on to Hood (if the Ritual would have been undone).
Then he normally gives back the memories, although in this case he gave them to the Mhybe instead.

Since we are all about reminiscing old books, Torvald Nom, where in the books have he been before. He strikes me as oddly familiar. Relative to Rallick nom, but has he appeared in any of the previous books?

He travelled with karsa at the beginning of HoC and helped him to escape.

He's the one that escapes with Karsa from the Narthii slave traders. Then later, when Karsa is recaptured and taken on the ship to 7C he is with him again, they go into the Nascent, survive floods and sharks, meet one of The Old Guard in his Dinosaur Tower and finally pass ways somewhere on 7C.
