Nader's closet is AWESOME

Illy: is that why you haven't come out yet? ZING!

Nader isn't a bad guy, but his time is past for presidential elections. He and the Greens did a decent job of promoting environmental issues which have now been subsumed by the big 2.

I see Mark Foley isn't on that list, it must be because he was a Democrat Congressman. Fox News says so, it must be true.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Like I said, I listen to a lot of people. Have you ever actually listened to him?

I can't stand O'Reilly at all. He has guests on so he can tell them what their opinion is. He talks over everybody and is just a general jerkface. Yes, I used the word "jerkface" in a sentence. :)

Well, he doesn't have guests (normally) and most callers call to agree with him, so he I've never actually heard a show where he was a jerk to anyone. I've heard him disagree with people, but he wasn't an ass about it. Granted, I've only listened to half hour chunks here and there over the past year.

The other guy I can't stand besides O'Reilly is Mike Malloy. He's another guy who cuts off and talks over any caller who starts to voice a different view than his, and then tells the audience what that person's opinion was after he has hung up on them.

Basically, I like hosts who let someone make their point and then tell them they're wrong. I don't like hosts who talk over the person and don't let them even get past their preamble.

Yes. Actually I do.

Mostly because in my experience the people who "hate" Rush Limbaugh have never listened to him and never actually talk about the main theme or salient points of his radio program.

Now I know he's made some really freaking stupid comments that are supposed to be "jokes", usually repeated by other sources when there is no context provided. But I generally don't hold those types of things against people when taken against the larger backdrop of what they have to say. The man is pretty pompous and arrogant, that much is clear, but those are probably the very qualities that make him good at being an on-air personality.

For instance, I don't feel that Obama ever needed to apologize for his association with Reverand Wright. Reverand Wright's ill-advised comments account for basically 2 sound bites out of years and years of being a reverand. That sort of thing isn't something I care about and I don't think it reflects on Obama's character in any way. It doesn't change Obama's message. (therefore, I wanted to punch sean hannity for going on and on about how terrible that whole thing was. Molehill to mountain.)

Same goes for Obama's wife who said "for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country ". That sort of thing sounds like something I'd say if I wasn't being careful about how I chose my words. That quote was another molehill to mountain and shouldn't be held against her.

I'd rather listen to Rush than ORILY any day.

We listened to Rush in my English 101 class a couple of weeks ago. Our assignment was to identify all of his claims, and then list his logical fallacies. It was a long list. :)

I must be listening to him on his good days then. :)

As you probably can tell, I really dislike the talk show host if they are uncivil and boorish, and anyone who spouted some sort of message of hate, I would certainly not listen to. Rush will go on about how "liberals are the #1 threat to america" by their insidiousness or foolishness. But I have never heard him say that he "hates" liberals.

@Terez: Do you happen to have that list or some examples? Sounds interesting.

How bout I just give you the transcript of the sound bite we listened to, and you can make your own list? :) We were asked to discuss implied claims as well (like, what was he really trying to get at here):

Rush Limbaugh said:

I want to know. I look at Iowa, I look at Illinois—I want to see the murders. I want to see the looting. I want to see all the stuff that happened in New Orleans. I see devastation in Iowa and Illinois that dwarfs what happened in New Orleans. I see people working together. I see people trying to save their property…I don’t see a bunch of people running around waving guns at helicopters, I don’t see a bunch of people running shooting cops. I don’t see a bunch of people raping people on the street. I don’t see a bunch of people doing everything they can…whining and moaning—where’s FEMA, where’s BUSH. I see the heartland of America. When I look at Iowa and when I look at Illinois, I see the backbone of America.

The reason my prof picked this one is because we were in Katrina's high destruction zone as well. We know what happened, because we lived through it (and we're still living through it in many ways, 3 years later).

Ok, the raping, shooting, looting comment is obviously falsely overblown. Also, I don't see that the damage of Katrina was any less devastating than the floods in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.

The claim I see, which I agree is false, is that somehow the midwest flood victims pulled together, gritted their teeth and worked, while the poor of New Orleans just sat around and whined.

Do you mind if I ask though, why were you talking about Rush Limbaugh in English 101?

Because we were covering argumentative writing, and logical fallacies, and the prof thought it would be a good exercise. We did several similar exercises, though the other ones were with written stuff.

Honestly, reading that, all those "crimes" were reportedly committed by minorities. I think Rush is being fairly racist without blatantly crossing the line by not naming names. Reading between the lines that is what I get.

Plus Rushy boy basically thinks liberals are evil. That they want to destroy the country, and he regularly demonizes them. That is hate-mongering to me.

See, this is why conservatives are better. Not that McCain is a conservative, but still, not quite a liberal.

I'm not sure how serious you are in the above post Bent, but I'd like to make everyone aware that McCain divorced his first wife in 1980. This was the woman who waited faithfully for him while he was in the Hanoi Hilton, and had been badly injured in a car crash. He then married his 26-year old multi-million dollar beer heiress one month later. You can read between the lines.

For more detail have a look at this article.
