I agree that those things are the most important and I do not fully support the war. But is pulling out the best thing to do right now? From what I know (which really isn't much I guess) the situation in Iraq is...sensitive. They do not have a strong enough central government to sustain themselves.
This argument has been made repeatedly over the past five+ years. If we stay, it will keep getting made, because it will keep being true. That is a good reason to leave, not to stay. There is not an externally enforceable military solution - our very presence is a part of the problem we're trying to fix.

All we need to know is that they want us to leave. Now. And they is the vast majority of the people. the situation is only sensitive if the US government still wants its economy to coast off of the lion's share of Iraqi oil and war profiteering. Let's be clear about what's at stake.

The timeframe for a stable, doesn't-need-constant-military-presence Iraq is highly debatable.
We've invested a pretty large amount of time and money in the bitch, and we're going to invest more.
By that uncertainty, the success v cost correlation is highly fluid. There's not enough information to actually say what will happen, or what it will cost us. So it is tough to sell a stick-with-it policy to anyone without total faith in the government (Read: most of us).
There is no doubt in my mind that with infinite resources, the "nation" of Iraq could be transformed into a veritable democratic Eden in the Middle East.
The sticky point is where on [tomorrow <--------> the sun explodes] and [$1 <---------> all your monies] it's going to take.

Hey everyone look, in an obvious vote pandering attempt, Bush/McCain are trying to fool un-informed voters. This would not help oil prices now, nor would it really contribute to lowering the price over a long-term goal.
Perhaps Bush and the Rep's should have agreed to This Bill which would have Taxed oil companies for price gouging and on their total profits. Bush said (in the article) that he 'expects' oil companies to spend the money the gov didn't take from them and re-invest it in pipelines, refinerys, and renewable energy resources.
Why couldn't the gov have thrown the tax on, taken the money, and spent it to fund research of their own?
Meh. Time for an armed rebellion to dethrone the 1% of rich and their cronies, no. Past time for the government to support its people as the people support governement? I think so.
I am a fan of big buisiness and the capitalist system, however I do not think the 'lassiez-faire'(I think thats how its spelled) system works perfectly and needs governmental adjustments when mandated by a large majority of the population.
Understand what I am saying? I fear I am not being entirely clear...

Quite clear, I agree. Anyone hear that there's a push for Obama to take a Republican on as VP? Boooooo. Unless it gets him elected.

I don't know. I'm frightened! In a reversal of our typical discussions, maybe we should debate it endlessly and discover that we actually disagree?

Ha.
Let me start. I think Obama needs a hair cut?

I think we should have a "windfall tax - tax" on the government. Let's assess all of the wasteful spending done by the federal government (a task that would undoubtedly take a battalion of accountants years to complete) and then force the government to return that money to the taxpayers.
To be honest, I'm confused as to what the windfall profits tax would actually DO for the rest of us. It's not going to make the price of gasoline any better, so isn't it just the politics of envy and punishment?

or do like some states and force the federal government to operate on a balanced budget through constitutional amendment

I would love it if the feds had to have a balanced budget, or at least be able to provide a very good reason why they aren't. Not going to happen anytime soon though.

Soooo...who voted for McCain in this poll? Nobody ever said they did or explained why. I'm just wondering, because many of the Obama supporters here made it clear who they like...

i picked mccain because i believe he understands the problems in the southwest a lot better than obama does and i dont feel obama has nearly enough politcal experience to warrant being president in the current world political climate
