Apparently Napoleon made a record of all the soldiers who died in his service. It was called "something, something"... of the fallen.

Erikson borrowed that idea and called his series Malazan Book of the Fallen.

From the beginning of the series you're supposed to think of the series as a bunch of historical accounts you're sitting and reading in some dusty old library a long time after the Malazan empire fell.

It's odd how you stop thinking about it after a while but they really don't seem like they are records at all do they, they'd be kind of like almanacs or stats books if they were.

But the Viking is right, it's the dead.

Yeah, Napolean's book was simply "The Book of the Fallen", I believe. Malazan isn't simply just a list of the dead obvious, its their stories, but its the same sort of idea, heh.

If someone is reading it, it's long after Grub became First Sword of the Malazan Empire. So all the mortals are most likely dead.

Erikson is writting the series more as a tragedy than anything else. The hero doesn't get the girl, the farmboy doesn't inheret the kingdom and everything doesn't have a happy ending. Expect a lot of death before the last book.

The way it's going, I'm almost expecting the entire "Malazverse" to explode at the end, everybody dead ;)

But Apt's right, Erikson and ICE are deliberately avoiding all the neat, tidy, happy endings a lot of fantasy series eventually come to.

Book of the Fallen. In the series, SE has his characters continuously explore the notion of how events are eventually twisted in history records. That is also, contrasted with the various snippets that SE placed before each chapter to show that yes, real history has indeed changed in history books. So, Book of the Fallen, is the unseen, unknown record of real history, that we readers have the privilege to read. And there's a tragic ring to it, on top of all those tragedies in the series, probably because, and rightly so because the message resonates so deeply with us. That, for us too, our history of this present time, will become something otherwise down the passage of time.

I always assumed the fallen was the crippled god since he was called down and fell to the planet

How then would explain the word "Malazan" in the title? The malazans have nothing to do with The Fall of the CG

I think it's referring to the histories written by Duiker. In DG there's a line where someone asks him if he's keeping up with his lists of the fallen, referring to his records of all who have died. No page number, sorry. I think this is alluding to the fact that at least some of what we're reading was written by him. He is an imperial historian, after all.

I thought the malazan part of the title referred to the fact that we were seeing the period of the crippled god's existence that had a direct influence on the malazans and was told from the malazans perspective

Could be, but the line I'm talking about says "lists of the fallen" when they are talking about the dead. I could easily be wrong, but I'm sticking with my guess until SE gives me reason not to.

it is sad thinking that everyones gonna die...

it's not just the literal sense of dying though. the bridgeburners aren't all dead and the ones that did, well, they are encompassd in that title. even others, who aren't Malazan are still in the books, becuase the series is a collection of stories maybe even a direct translation at smiley's inn. there's also a sense of dying as far as going down goes. (well that sounds wierd) it could just refer to those who come down from a higher standpoint, in a waging war of higher morals and even higher morales.

you could say it's like the Joy Luck Club except more cleverly written, expertly intertwined and not about Chinese people.

She'll come up with something I'm sure, but that's a tough replacement.

well if there is a "late empire period" in which grub is the first sword, your assumptions should be pretty safe.
