then could she really have used it on purpose? then again, his adventures couldn't have remained untold. i don't think it was a coincidence per-say but i do think SE had the meaning in mind when choosing his words.
there is one difference here though, karsa had someone to witness.

.... it's not a question of whether Tavore was purposefully setting herself up against Karsa or not. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that would be immaterial no matter how you slice it. The prompt I selected was *supposed* to be a question of whether or not SE put it in his writing specifically to set up the Bonehunters and their rallying cry up against Karsa's, and whether that would have any significance for the future of the novels.
But even the OP's (my) intent is besides the point now, as this thread has been squashed of any kind of literary value under an avalanche of banal fixations.

Thats part of why that strikes me as a possible seed for something later...who knows what. On the surface I couldn't figure out what that might have changed either but seems strange for SE to go out of the way to have this dialog if it wasn't going to lead to something somehow later on....but hell there are so many twists and turns in these books I wouldn't be suprised if something like this didn't amount to anything either. Only time will tell.
I think that you might be reading too much into it. If you read the quote, the tense seems to suggest: mael thought that things might have turned out better if he had only spoken to Ubala, *while* in the altar. It does not specifically say that he still felt this way after escaping and finding that Tehol was not dead....but, as you say, it might hint atsomething deeper.
I still think it's just a teaser to make us think that Tehol is going to die. Drama!

Ok, maybe Ublala is just telling him that Rhulad can't die, but that seems pretty obvious. I got the feeling from this scene that Ublala is actually the one who tells Karsa what the deal is with the sword and the connection to the CG. HOW THE HELL DOES UBLALA KNOW ANY OF THIS!?? Am confuse. Also, since when is Ublala in the Rat Catcher's guild? That one took me by surprise...
Remember the scenein the Thartenal graveyard when Ublala kills Arbat so he can guide the Thartenal spirits to hlp Kuru Qan and the others?Well I think Arbat told Ublala who told Karsa.

Ublala meets Karsa before he meets Arbat, though. Maybe Mael gave Ublala a message to pass on to Karsa regarding Rhulad's sword. Either that or Ublala simply did tell Karsa that it was the sword that revives Rhulad (as most people seem to know this). This then gave Karsa the idea of what to do.

Ublala did mention Arbat in his discussion with Karsa. Could be that Karsa and Arbat hooked up later (in spirit-dreams or in person or what-have-you) to divulge more info.

Or Ublala meets Arbat before the graveyard and then meet again. It isn't impossible

"Witness" is a recurring theme through these stories, similar to compassion. Without witnessing, there can be no truth: This is what happened with Dom and Rel subverting the Malazan-Wickan relationship. It appears in tRotCG as well.

It would have been cool if Karsa had stayed in Letheras. The Malazans would be like, "WTF? What's this guy doing here?"

And then we discover that Karsa is immune to munitions as much as magic:D

"Stand up and spin around on the spot."
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Bugg w/Ublala:
I'm so confused... what exactly would have changed, one way or the other, if he'd been open with Ublala? Specifically, what would have changed in the time Bugg was stuck in the altar, since presumably that's the "extended time of retrospection" that follows...? Does Bugg think Tehol and Janath might have been rescued earlier? Or not made Emperor and wifey/scholar/etc?
Annnnd that just about sums up my confusion with Reaper's Gale. Holler.

Without the TTT souls to make the portal, Rhulad would not have died, which would mean Lethar still in control of CG. Tehol, brys, malazans and Karsa dead.
All this was possible because Bugg leaves.
meh...just guessing.
