Yeah that's the one. cheers!
I want to die the way my dad died, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

Some Dune quotes:

"Any road followed precisely to its end leads precisely nowhere."

"The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience."

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

Both of my favorite lines are (I'm quite certain...) from George R. R. Martin. Though I admit I don't recall the context nor the book that they come from.

"Dead, all dead but me, and I'm dead to the world."

"Fate guides who will; who won't, it drags."

The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
Douglas Adams, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"

Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.
Terry Pratchett

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.
Reaper Man, Terry Pratchett

**** 'I am saddened,' Pran said,'that I may not return in twenty years to see the woman this child shall become.'
**** 'You shall,' K'rul said in a low tone, 'but not as a T'lan. As a T'lan Imass Bone Caster.'
**** breath hissed between Pran's teeth. 'How long?' he asked.
**** -'three hundred thousand years, Pran Chole of Cannig Tol's Clan.'
**** Kruppe laid a hand on Pran's arm. 'You've something to look forward to,' he said.
**** The T'lan stared at Kruppe a moment, then he threw back his head and roared with laughter.

Most of my favourites are from Pratchett.

There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

From Small Gods

"Chain letters," said the Tyrant. "The Chain Letter to the Ephebians. Forget Your Gods. Be Subjugated. Learn to Fear. Do not break the chain -- the last people who did woke up one morning to find fifty thousand armed men on their lawn."

Also small gods

His philosophy was a mixture of three famous schools -- the Cynics, the Stoics and the Epicureans -- and summed up all three of them in his famous phrase, "You can't trust any bugger further than you can throw him, and there's nothing you can do about it, so let's have a drink."

Dydactylos from small gods.

This is just a few from my favourite pratchett book.

“The soul must bend to endure.” Guy Gavriel Kay The Lord of Emperors

“You strip from me the laurel and the rose!
Take all! Despite you there is yet one thing
I hold against you all, and when, to-night,
I enter Christ's fair courts, and, lowly bowed,
Sweep with doffed casque the heavens' threshold blue,
One thing is left, that, void of stain or smutch,
I bear away despite you.
. . .
My panache.”
Cyrano De Bergerac by Edmond Rostand

I AM LEGEND...

one of my favourite sentances of all. the last three words of Matherson's book of the same name.
I want to die the way my dad died, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

Quote

"It was the day my grandmother exploded. I sat in the crematorium, listening to my Uncle Hamish quietly snoring in harmony to Bach’s Mass in B Minor, and I reflected that it always seemed to be death that drew me back to Gallanach."

Opening line from Iain Banks' THE CROW ROAD.

Enjoyable mini series as well.

Quote

Into this wild Abyss,
The Womb of nature and perhaps her Grave,
Of neither Sea, nor Shore, nor Air, nor Fire,
But all these in their pregnant causes mixed
Confusedly, and which thus must ever fight,
Unless the Almighty Maker them ordain
His dark materials to create more Worlds,
Into this wild Abyss the wary fiend
Stood on the brink of Hell and looked a while,
Pondering his voyage.

Paradise Lost, Book II

One of my favourite reads of all time, especially the first two books, and also the inspiration for Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy.

Because the thread title doesn't stipulate fantasy...

"Boys and girls in America have such a sad time together..."

Edit: I guess the sub-forum does though...

Gelser always did have a way with words.
This is a bit from DG when he's being told off by the historian.

'Coastal. Remember? We ain' officially in the Seventh and I don't care if you were Kulp's long lost brother, if you're of a mind to use that tone on me, you'd better start telling me about the tragic loss of your uniform and maybe I'll buy the song and start callin' you "sir" or maybe I won't and you'll get your nose busted flat.'

'The personal, as everyone's so fucking fond of saying, is political. So if some idiot politician, some power player, tries to execute policies that harm you or those you care about, TAKE IT PERSONALLY. Get angry. The Machinery of Justice will not serve you here - it is slow and cold, and it is theirs, hardware and soft-. Only the little people suffer at the hands of Justice; the creatures of power slide out from under with a wink and a grin. If you want justice, you will have to claw it from them. Make it PERSONAL. Do as much damage as you can. GET YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS. That way you stand a far better chance of being taken seriously next time. Of being considered dangerous. And make no mistake about this: being taken seriously, being considered dangerous marks the difference, the ONLY difference in their eyes, between players and little people. Players they will make deals with. Little people they liquidate. And time and again they cream your liquidation, your displacement, your torture and brutal execution with the ultimate insult that it's just business, it's politics, it's the way of the world, it's a tough life and that IT'S NOTHING PERSONAL.

Well, fuck them. Make it personal.'
