or it could be assassin-fishergirl-Apsalar who is the time traveler and she will go back in time 100 years and that will be Crokus' patron, thus making some sort of crazy loop thingy of influence.

Dear god no. Please, no. :hand:

For the sake of all of our sanity, can we just assume that there is only one original Apsalar(a)--and she's an Imass?

Talk about Walking Monkey Paradox! The very thought of multiple apsalar time shennanigans makes my mind shudder. :D I suppose it would be kinda cool though.

If there are three Apsalar's would that mean not-not-Apsalar is really not-not-not-Apsalar?

On topic, I don't see any reason the original supposedly Imass Apsalar couldn't have ascended before the ritual. That would give an obvious reason for not taking part anyway.

But Olar Ethil was in her soletaken appearance 'as an undead sister to Tiam', which I translate as ascended like most of the Soletaken humanoids we encountered, with the possible exception of Korlat and Orfantal - and she is very much a'n Imass who went through the ritual. So, from that, there is no real deduction that there would be no need or cause for Apsalar'a to show up at the Ritual.

Of course, it could be that Tiam surfaced a last time somewhere after the Ritual, so that Olar Ethil could have a sip.

Olar is the twin to Tiams form, I took that as meaning Olar matched Tiams size, meaning she's HUGE!!!

To Apt:

aye, I doubt she would be Tiam's real sister (twin or not) - but it's more about timing than anything else: did she drink Tiam's blood before or after the Ritual? If before, then why did she actually need to take part in the Ritual (if, that is, drinking Tiam's blood and becoming soletaken is actually a straight path to ascendancy)?

And if she took part in the Ritual after ascending, then does that not mean that Apsalara could as well have taken part (though what a thief would gain from it apart from cool travel options I don't know), unless she was Dragnipured before the T'lan Ritual?

Drynjha was an post-Ritual Imass who ascended to Goddess, so obviously it's possible.

Apsalara's dialogue lacks the sense of grimness or futility that seems to characterize most post-ritual Imass we see, but then again, we've seen examples like Onrack and Tool who were fairly 'human'. It's the lack of description that makes me wonder. A name is just that, after all - Sorry adopted the name 'Apsalar' easily enuf, and insisted on keeping it even when Crockus suggested it didn't fit.

Anyrate, it's just a theory and i suppose a reminder we can't take anything dropped in as a hint in these books at face value.

Something to keep in mind in relation to that--Olar Ethil is the First Bonecaster
now, is this "First" as in "First Sword" or "First" as in "She was the first one to veer among the Imass"?

Now that i think about it, the prologue does NOT state whether she's undead or not, or even whether she's Imass. We have only Telorast and Curdle's say-so on that, and they were insane.

Actually even Cartheron brother whom I don't recall the name:eek: says that Apsalar'a was an Imass and here's the quote:

What's your name?
Apsalar...
No you aren't,she was an Imass...

Wow. In which case how does Urko (as I assume that's who it was) know that? Unless he met her 100 years ago when she returned and he was kicking around? I just went to check the prologue and see if there was any mention of how long she's been in there, but there's not.

I will also at this point apolgise for the incorrect spelling of Apsal'ara in the thread title.
EDIT: Corrected.

All we know is that there are three instances of an 'Apsalar(a)'. The original, the reappearance in Darujhistan, and Sorry.

Urko was around in the first days of the Malazan Empire, which would yes put him alive 100 years ago whenever Aps made an appearance. That said, he may have just heard it somewhere.

Well, we KNOW sorry ain't the original (hence the missing apostorophe in her name). She just took the name, because a boy she liked called her that.

Just to make your head hurt even more...

Maybe Telorast and Curdle will go back in time 100 years and talk to people in Darujhistan about a not-not-Apsalar, and people will think that this not-not-Apsalar is not "not-Apsalar", and thus deduce that this person is in fact Apsalar, and think that Apsalar has appeared...

DOCTOR WHO: Fucking Daleks finally learned how to ascend stairs! We're dead! Quick, Apsalar, snog me before we die!!!
