"Reapers gale" I thought it was in referance to hedge talking to the wind, which I also thought is where they get hood's breath from until I heard toc's explanation

I believe you are correct; that is what I thought, as well. What was Toc's explanation of Hood's Breath? I do not recall that explanation.

I also had huge problems with this book--- I was not impressed, the cussers being the least of the issues.

One from Fid and one from Hedge.

Mwahaha ;) you're right of course.

I factor Quick into the Silchas thing more than the ascended sappers with their favourite weapons... >.>

Actually it was an example to Redmask(along with Togg's teats,Beru mercy and Mowri fend) of how the god's are actually impotent and cannot intervene/help.

Not sure with this:D

Fid's 'drum' ambush alone made cussers worthwhile.

I have no problem with this - like any tech advance, the state that gets it first is going to take advantage of it. The Malazan marines were outnumbered. The cussers gave them back an edge, but they were also better trained, more effective and (i love this part) the Edur freaked when facing black-skinned humans.

As for Silch, he was pissed at the events in the Refugim and looking to kill. A lot. QB's magic and the two cussers knocked him down. Pissed and hurt, but the fury out if him, he left. If he had stayed, QB was out of juice - it might have gone badly for the marines.

Iirc, Smiles hit the demon prince with a flamer or something, not a cusser. Hedge showed us in MoI just how bad things go when one uses a cusser at close range.

Leoman in HoC came up with an equivalent exploding oil bola thingy.

yeah... I felt bad for the Demons... they didn't deserve being the drum's targets...

They weren't.

What do you mean, Abyss? From the marines going north and fooling the princes into going south, where they'd set up the drum, and the (approximate) line "It was really not their day," it seems pretty obvious they set it off.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Abyss is making the point that the demons were not the reason the drum was set! In fact if I recall correctly (please correct further if needs must), the drum was being set before Bottle realised they were demons. The drum was being set to get as many of the Letherii and Edur who were chasing the squad as possible. The demons just happened to be trying to farm in the wrong place and we all know how that goes.

BTW, as an additional tack-on were these two demons the same two demons sent off after the FA in MT? As I have a feeling they are, but don't remember why.

Even thought it seems that the demons set the drum of, the original target were indeed the Edur.

With all due respect (first post and all), it wasn't just cussers, it was Malazan Marines with cussers! Liked seeing the MMs doing their thing for real.

And for the title, I thought it was a paraphrase or something of "For they sow the wind, and they reap the whirlwind" from Hosea (googled it). Like, reap the whirlwind becomes more sinister with reap -> reaper, whirlwind -> gale. Maybe I'm way off, dunno ...

I thought the Letheii and Edur set it off???

I thought the whole Demon Prince encounter was brilliant, especially when Uru Hela just did an 'about face' and tried to run.....that wasn't pretty ;)

I didn't think that the Demons set the drum off, either. I thought they heard screams when the drum went off.

Just reread that, waiting for my ROTCG-copy (early -08, was it?).

At that moment they heard, distinctly, the sound of horses. Coming fast up the track.
"Let us set forth and commence our sweet vengeance, shall we?"
"Superior notion indeed. One of my eyes still works, which should suffice". The two Kenryll'ah demon princes set out for the cart path.
It really was not their day.
...
The detonations were a drumbeat of thunderous concussions that shook the earth beneath them.
"Four!" Fiddler said with a savage grin. Bottle saw Cuttle staring at the sergeant with undisguised awe and more than a little worship.
...
Damned sappers. Bottle shook his head. There was pain there, now, in that mangled stretch of track a quarter-league away. Human, beast, and ... oh, and demon.

So we don't know whether the demons or the Letherii triggered the drum, just that the both groups were affected by it.

Okay Kud, you can come out now...

- Abyss, is not too big to admit when he's [linet] wrong [/linet] the victim of ambiguity...

Well, yes, Abyss, I am aware that it was set for the Edur and the Letherii
My mastery of English languge is not as extensive as yours, for what I meant was that they were the ones that set it off. And they didn't deserve to be drumm'ed (new word, same synthax as Dragnipur'ed) like that.

kud13, basically feels sorry for cusser'ed Demon princes....

A Game of Tricks, Kruppe's tale: A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.
A Release in Crows, Coltaine's tale: A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.
A Storm of Kallor's Sword, Whiskeyjack's tale: A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.
Witness, Karsa's tale: A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.
A Clash of Things, Rhulad's tale: A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.
Witness Part II, Karsa's tale: A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.
A Dance with Death, Trull's tale: A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.

Sorry for the GRRM title wielding. I thought Xander's suggestion was in reference to this. I was wrong, A Farewell to Kings is a song by Rush, not a book by GRRM.
I don't know who's tale RG is, Rhulad's more than anything.

I think, more importantly, "A Farewell to Arms" is a book by Hemingway ;)

I think MOST importantly, "A Farewell to Arms" works as a pun referring to both martial arms (cursed sword) and functional Edur arms (Rhulad's arm), making it obvious to me that Hemmingway was trying to give SE ideas.
