Upon closer inspection, that list is complete shit.

It doesn't even have the original X-men cartoon on there, yet is has complete fucking dogshit like Captain fucking Caveman and the Teen Anuses...

How can anyone be surprised by Toy Story being on that list? It was a complete breakthrough in the world of animation, and was almost as big of a deal as Snow White.
Shrek was a breakthrough simply b/c it was one of the first animated movies to rely heavily on pop culture and focus more on an adult audience (not to mention its ridiculously huge success). Personally I liked it a lot, but I think they should've kept to one movie.

I'm not really surprised by anything on that list, although there are definitely some other cartoons I'd like to see on it (along with some re-ordering).

Tom and Jerry IS awesome btw, for lots of reasons. I even recently got a Tom and Jerry example at school...

I have to say that the 80s and early 90s cartoons were the best. Of course, I'm heavily biased, seeing as that's when I was growing up, but I think quite a few of you would agree with me that too many of the cartoons of today just aren't up to scratch, either animation- or writing-wise.

Some of my favourites then would be Transformers, The Pirates of Dark Water, Thundercats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Gargoyles, Spider-Man, Animals of Farthing Wood, and I'm sure many many others which I can't recall right now. Twas the golden age of Disney films too, with Aladdin, Lion King and all.

Ok, so here's a confession. I'm now fully grown up, and I still have to say that not only is Transformers: The Movie my favourite animated movie of all time, but it would also make my top 10 of all movies any day of the week. I could watch it any time, and probably know all the lines. Ok ok, so I know it was made only as a cynical ploy to market new toys, but the film did something the marketing department didn't expect: It rocked! As any film with Leonard Nimoy, Judd Nelson, Eric Idle and fucking Orson Welles (!!!) would.

I can't be all wrong. The film has great lines all over the place, high production values, twists you don't see coming (they kill Optimus Prime in the first quarter of the film!), a fantastically 80s soundtrack, Starscream, Prime vs. Megatron, Orson Welles as a frickin planet-sized transformer, and a guy saying 'shit!' in a film for kids!

And going back to that soundtrack, it was apparently voted somewhere to be in the top ten soundtracks to a film ever. The power songs are ridiculously cheesy, but they and the instrumental pieces fit each scene like a glove.

P.S. Screechy, prone-to-errors but kick-ass animated Starscream ("Pathetic fools! There's no escape!") beats Michael Bay's serious 'I'm a triangle' Starscream any day.

While I remember a lot of cartoons from the late 80/early 90s none of them have a remote chance against some of the stuff more recently. There is quality animation/cartoons out there thought with few exceptions it aint made in the western world where cartoons are mostly butt ugly and even when targeted for a mature audience feels a bit silly I think. Check out some of the better anime out there (not the mainstream ones like Pokemon and Naruto which are abominations) Kinos Journey is pretty good for some serious topics, Requim from the Darkness is a favorit of mine working with Japanese folklore and horror stories, one which is a bit more mindless fun is Baccano also utterly brilliant...

But then I guess most people want it in english not just subbed and most english dubs are simply horrendous compared to the originals...

If I could, I'd rep you for that right now! So glad to know there is somone else out there finding Baccano! brilliant... Most other people I know reacted in a WTF? way and never really bothered with it past the first episode...

That list fails spectacularly, and shouldn't be used as a reference for ANYTHING.

I think what I loved most about 90s era cartoons was how gritty/dark they could be. YTV in particular had a lot of this, even devoting most of the Friday line-up to it (this included lots outside of animation though). Plus you had things like X-men, the 90s Spiderman, etc.

I also challenge the belief that shows you liked when you were younger are now lacking when watched from an adult perspective. Within the last 2 years I managed to catch the entirely of Gargoyles for the first time since I was quite young and the show still rocks. So fie on you all!

That trailer video doesn't seem to work - at least for me...

But, yes, it is difficult to say what the series is about without revealing major spoilers - the story is not being told in a linear way, but as a puzzle with pieces that slowly fall into place towards the end. And it IS very, very violent sometimes... but great fun to watch, I just love the characters, and the music in the background is superb. And I would deffinitely recommend watching it in Japanese original with English subs...
