Just followed this link to a little story about a solar panel company in Colorado. It made me feel that at least some people are trying. And at least Boulder, Colorado is trying to encourage it's citizens by giving tax rebates. There is hope.

Seattle is talking about banning plastic grocery bags. You'll have to bring your own cloth bags to shop. Also on the chopping block is foam food containers and plastic cutlery.

The plastic bag ban is a good idea. In Ireland they introduced a plastic bag tax of 5c a bag, and it was amazing how quickly people stopped using them. It was also amazing how quickly you stopped seeing them hanging from trees and the like, because of that ban.

A reduction in the amount of food packaging would be good too.

I saw a lecture last year by a guy studying the effects of plastics on the environment. Apparently, plastics will degrade to a certain point, after which you get these microparticles which don't really break down, and get assimilated by all kinds of organisms. They've now tested animals from all over the world and have found these bits of plastic everywhere. Even in the tissues of antarctic bivalves. It's all very sad.

Yeah, the bag thing is a good idea. I think they will still have bags available for 10 cents a bag or something. I'm all for using the cloth bags, but I like having the plastics around the house because I use them to clean the ferrets litter box. Guess I'll have to come up with a new method.

I use compact fluorescent light bulbs.
I recycle and reuse like a mad man.
I drive only to work and only 2 out of 5 days a week.
I participate in programs every year to plant new trees.
I never use heat or air.
I shop at local food markets.
