well, she's originally mentioned in tBH, as one of the challengers picked up by the Edur fleet....

Also. I still like mine "she was terrified of Icarium theory :p

I'd say it's a fair asumption that they would have heard of Icarium, so that is entirely possible.

I'd be more inclined to think that once she was defeated by Karsa, she no longer had any reason to stay and fight when a more worthy challenger was present. That and she probably saw no reason to stay and possibly die when her own prowress has already been show up (Rhulad in no way threatens them so it's not a cause to die for).

QUOTE (Stalker @ Jan 23 2009, 01:09 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."

I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

Theres most likely more than one 12th. Someone from MOI remarks that they expected the Seguleh punitive army to be made up of 300 or so 13th level initiates, and that the didnt expect the 3rd to show.

It would make more sense to have the lower (probably starting at the 10th) ranks occupied by more than one person. Otherwise you'd have a society that would have to keep track of 10,000 different ranks, or however large their army is.

For all we know, the 12th may not even be all that high of a rank. The 11th from MoI certainly had some skill, but he was only 14, so he may have been up and coming.

As for what the 12th is doing in Lether, another possibility is that she was sent on some kind of mission that had nothing to do with killing Rhulad, after all we know the K'Chain are present on that continent...

You're getting confused between initiates and actual hard ranks I believe.

@Blue: Aye, whenever the initiates are mentioned they're always stated as just that- initiates. The charcters we get to see, who have skill, exist above the initiate level. I'd assume it works under a initiate rank system (you progress through levels), until you qualify as skilled enought o be able to contest actual ranks.

They way initiates are mentioned with some disdain by Mok would indicate that they are of nowhere near an equal level, and I wouldnt have imagined they, as a proud warrior society, would send an initiate to take up a challenge. Aside from the fact she seems highly skilled in the scenes in RG and seems to command alot of respect from others.

Also, dont read too much into Seguleh age, we still arent too sure how the system works with all the species- problems with Karsa's age have been identified, for instance, and the way that Wu's orbit works could be such way that a year there is actually 3 of ours, making him quite old, or some such crap like that.

Damn this quote took a while to find:

Reaper, on Chapter 7, said:

Among them there were warriors considered worthy enough to be treated as challengers. An axeman from the ruined Meckros City the fleet had descended upon, a Cabalhii monk and a silent woman wearing a porcelain mask the brow of which was marked with eleven arcance glyphs - she had been found near dead in a storm-battered scow south of Callows.

That doesn't sound like she was dispatched by the Seguleh leadership...

Senu (Thurule?) wasnt the 11th. He was an 11th Level Initiate. There's a difference; one of the Seguleh remarks that the Pannion missionaries to Seguleh Isle were massacred for entertainment among the "lower schools." This is where i believe Senu or Thurule was ranked, seeing as he was only 14 at the time.

Right. Though the initiate levels are probably ascending, while the hierarchal ranks are descending.
Ie: a seguleh progresses:

Noob
Initiate level 1
Initiate level 2
Initiate level 3
...
Initiate level 99
(defeats an old arthritis-stricken seguleh)
#20
(defeats # 19)
#19
...
(defeats #1)
#1
