PLEASE NOTE THAT MORE RESOLUTION DETAILS ARE PROVIDED IN THE NEXT POST.
General Roles and Mechanics
5 clans, each 4 players. One Leader, General, Lieutenant and Spearman.
Chain of command. Lieutenants know their General. Generals know their Leader. Leaders will only know any recruits they might gain. Spearmen know only the name of their clan and no one knows them.
General Leader Abilities
Forge Alliance – Open (Day) During any day, a leader may send the name of a clan to PS requesting an alliance. If the alliance is accepted, this is announced on thread. (ex. Miura has Allied with Uesugi). Allied teams gain this benefit - Any day or night action taken by an openly allied clan member against your own clan is cancelled. The alliance also prevents recruitment attempts by any team that does not have its own Open alliance. (ex. Takeda has no allies. They attempt to recruit a member of the Uesugi. Uesugi is allied with the Miura, so the attempt fails.) Alliances must be renewed daily or become void. Double votes do not work against clans who hold a valid Open alliance. Only one ally is allowed per day/night cycle. Alliances are forged via Ironman rules.
Forge Alliance – Secret (Night) In addition to an official ally, there can be a secret ally. Again, a leader may send the name of a clan to PS requesting an alliance. If the alliance is accepted, the following benefits exist. If the clan in the secret alliance attempts a night kill or recruitment of the Open alliance team, that action will succeed, bypassing any guards AND bulletproofs.
(Example: Miura Openly aligns with Takeda. Miura Secretly aligns with Uesugi. Now, any Uesugi actions against the Takeda will succeed unhindered.)
Promote – During the night phase a leader may attempt to “promote” someone. They submit the name of a player of their choice. If that person is on the leader’s team and if they are in a position to be promoted (i.e., the position above them is open) they are promoted. Leader will be informed whether they have succeeded or not.
Recruit Ally – Secret (Night) During any night, a leader may send the name of a player to PS whom they wish to try and recruit. Certain players not of the same clan may be recruited. (Players who may be recruited are not allied with the leader’s clan. If the player is the rank of Lieutenant, the recruitment succeeds that night. Generals must receive the recruitment action 2 nights in a row. Spearmen are not recruitable.) Leader is informed of success or failure. Partial successes (on generals) are also reported as ‘failure’ the first time.
Bulletproof. One time bulletproof against full Night Kill. If the bulletproof is removed, it can come back if not attacked for 2 consecutive nights. Bullet proof is NOT effective against Day action wounding. Wounding Night attacks reduce the Bulletproof accordingly if, say, the General's Lieutenant and/or Spearman is dead. Example: if the bulletproof has absorbed a single wounding already, and the Leader is hit by a full Night Kill, they will receive a single wound (Full kill minus the 2 point BP remaining).
Immune from Day attacks as long as your* General is alive. Not immune from lynches.
Your* General meaning the Leader's original. If their first general is dead, but they have recruited a new one, this does not recreate their Immunity to Day attacks.
General General Abilities
Attack – Open (Day) – During the day phase a general may order an attack on the player of their choosing. If the attack succeeds, the target is wounded. Wounded targets cannot use any day abilities. This system will work by Ironman Rules. Generals may not attack the same target two days in a row. A target wounded twice loses its night actions as well. A target wounded three times dies. Generals are not informed of the effect of their action.
Attack – Surprise (Night) A General may order an attack on the player of their choosing. This is a normal “kill” action, and if successful the target dies. If the General’s team still has the Lieutenant, the attack is carried out with 100% kill effectiveness (barring bulletproof or other preventative actions). If the lieutenant is dead and the spearman is not, the attack is carried out but does a double wounding instead. If both lieutenant and spearman are dead, the attack does a single wounding.
One time bulletproof against day attacks (wounding).
General Lieutenant Abilities
Defend – Open (Day) – During the day phase a Lieutenant may order a defensive position around the player of their choosing. If that target is attacked, this works as a guard against the attack. You may not order this defense on yourself. (basically a healer)
Defend – Secret (Night) A lieutenant may order a detail of soldiers to protect the player of their choice at night. Any attempt to kill that target results in a wounding instead. (a heal, but cannot prevent wounding but reduces double woundings to a single wound)
General Spearman Abilities
Vote counts double if on the same train with their leader. Cannot be recruited.
No other abilities.
All actions performed are subject to appearing in scenes. Only Open Alliances are announced on thread.

The PMs with information edited out that players are not to know. (personalization for each character not added)
You are Omori Fujiwari , Lord of Odawara Castle and have played a principal agent to the Ashikaga Shogunate for a long time. With the death of Hojo Souen however, the vacuum of power in Izu is too tempting to ignore.
Now is the time to take action, with your best troops and your finest diplomacy, to extend your power, lands and influence.
Abilities
Forge Open Alliance – (Day Phase) During any day, a leader may send the name of a clan to PS requesting an alliance. If the alliance is accepted, this is announced on thread. (ex. Miura has Allied with Uesugi).
Allied teams gain the following benefits –
1) Any day or night action taken by an openly allied clan member against your own clan is cancelled.
2) The alliance also prevents recruitment attempts by any team that does not have its own Open alliance. (ex. Takeda has no allies. They attempt to recruit a member of the Uesugi. Uesugi is allied with the Miura, so the attempt fails.)
You may only have one open alliance at a time, and alliances must be renewed (mutually) each new day. Please submit a list to Path-Shaper of any clans from whom you would accept an alliance in order of preference. Please also indicate clans with whom you would refuse an offer of alliance. If on a future day phase you wish to break your alliance in order to form another, simply indicate on your list to PS on that day that the clan with whom you are currently allied with is no longer acceptable.
The Clans are: Ashikaga, Fujiwari, Miura, Takeda, Uesugi
Forge Alliance – Secret (Night) In addition to an official ally, there can be a secret ally. Again, a leader may send a list of clans to PS requesting an alliance.
Secret alliances must also be renewed in the same fashion as Open alliances.
Leaders may also choose one of the following night actions (not both).
Not all role types may be recruited. Leader is informed of success or failure. There are Partial successes, but these will be reported as a ‘failure’ on the first attempt.
Bulletproof. One time bulletproof against full NK. If the bulletproof is removed, a new bulletproof will replace it if not attacked again for 2 consecutive nights. Bulletproof does not protect against wounding.
Immune from Day attacks as long as your General is alive. You are not immune from lynches however.
You are General under () of the clan.
Abilities
Attack – Open (Day) – During the day phase a general may order an attack on the player of their choosing. If the attack succeeds, the target is wounded. Wounded targets cannot use any day abilities. This system will work by Ironman Rules. Generals may not attack the same target two days in a row. A target wounded twice loses its night actions as well. A target wounded three times dies. You will not be informed of the effectiveness of your action (success, or failure).
Attack – Surprise (Night) A General may order an attack on the player of their choosing. This is a normal “kill” action, and if successful the target dies.
One time bulletproof against day attacks. (Not a protection against lynching
)
You are Lieutenant under Genera () of the clan.
Abilities
Defend – Open (Day) – During the day phase a Lieutenant may order a defensive position around the player of their choosing. If that target is attacked, this works as a guard against the attack. You may not order this defense on yourself.
Defend – Secret (Night) A lieutenant may order a detail of soldiers to protect the player of their choice at night. Any attempt to kill that target results in a wounding instead.
You are a Spearman of the clan. You are not very bright, and just follow orders of your commanding officer, whose name you always forget.
Abilities
Vote counts double if on the same train with your leader.
No other abilities.
General Thread Announcement in regards to Game Mechanics
Teams are even in numbers. There is a system of wounding in place for this game. Some actions present can kill and/or wound. A player wounded 3 times is dead.
All actions performed are subject to appearing in scenes in some manner. There is a system of “Open Alliance” between clans, and those alliances as they happen will be announced on the game thread.
I am not following D’rek’s RO3K fashion of giving people roles held previously. I don’t want alt-guessing to be a factor in games, which is why I am doing this. There are some roles present from the previous game, but they are being rewarded to players by “luck of the draw”.

Holy shit. Should be fun but I want no part it trying to Mod it! Lol.
As for balance, it is obviously fair, considering. I'd put it at TMDI 6 or 7? Seems complicated but that could just be me and the Merc + wounding/killing mechanic. Giving every player an ability should make people care, so participation should be no problem. That being said, game might be slightly over-roled, but better over than under IMO.
At least they know their leaders, should make for an interesting normal Merc Culture-Hunt dynamic.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Fixed. Copy/Paste fail.
Yeah, modding will be a trip.
I also look at the draw of Takeda's members and think, wow, they could be good. Khell as a leader should be fun, and of course Morgy could have a good game, and with Tattersail as his General. The Dude as a leader...super lurking could help (I don't think he's done a lot of posting in recent games).
Players are going to be pretty in the dark, but I think that's par for the course for Mercs. At least they know their teams are even.
-------------
As for being role heavy - I hope that things will balance out in terms of actions. Some crazy luck could happen I suppose, and a team could be crippled early, but I tried to make the checks/balances to ensure a game not entirely decided by NA's. PeanutButta was a big help, so I have to give out a big thank you to him for his review and advice for my setup.
Edited to add: I wish I'd done the Hugin and Munin trick. I really need two Mod handles to make this easier - one for messages and one for actions.

huh, that's interesting. It didn't occurred to me that I had to. Well, with no information to go on I guess the only question is whether it's beneficial or not, and considering the weakness of not having an ally, it would seem so.
Still, are there some historic preferences that would make other people more willing?
I have no clue. An alliance would limit my recruit-abilities, yes? Still, it seems the better option.
So, whom to ask. I think I beat Shogun at the highest difficulty with Takeda back in the day, so why not. Ask Takeda. Usegi where the warrior monks people right? Let's rate them as number two. Then we'll go alphabetical: Ashikaga followed by Fujiwara.

Clarifications
Day actions resolve instantly, so when action PMs are received the time they are sent will be noted.
Allies will be decided based on how preferences match up. Leaders will be asked in a PM separate from their role PM, asking them to submit (or defer) their preference list.
I have sent out PM's asking leaders to make their Open Alliance lists. They must be submitted during the day (not pre-game). Because alliances must be mutually agreed on, starting out with these on Ironman rules makes sense since it's not really first come first serve. It also works for storylines. What makes it tricky is how their Alliance resolution will interact with the resolution of other Day Actions. My hope (perhaps vain), is that people don't start blowing their Day loads without some thought first.
Wounding system 3 wounds = death. 2 wounds = no day or night actions. 1 wound = no day actions (does not effect Alliance requests).
1 wound heals every 3 days (maximum 1 wound per day). (Interpret, 3 complete days)

I am, thrilled, that is. Bit nervous about bein leader, I have a tendency to blow up when having an important role in faction games.

Thanks P-S, any insight you'd like to share to enhance my level of play?
Does it matter whether my vote follows or precedes my leader?
Also, is it going to be obvious during updates? Say there are 3 votes on Osseric (one of them is from my leader). I vote, then next P-S vote update there are 5 votes for Osseric but only 4 names on the list. You're not going to out me like that, right?
On the flip side, if I vote and my leader isn't on the train, will there be 4 votes on Osseric after I vote, and then say my leader votes him next - will the vote count jump to 6?
Or are the votes counted on thread as one vote per person, but # of votes for lynches is done behind the scenes?
Either way, it's going to be hard for me to find my leader if the one-person/one-vote updates are made because anyone on the train could be my leader. We're starting with 20 people, right? Well, it's going to be interesting to see how things play out early. I need to find good reasons to be on the train so I can analyze multiple lynch results and hopefully find some of my teammates.
Also it's going to be easier for me to avoid attention if I'm in the middle of the train, I think. The votes that hammer when they look like they shouldn't are not something I want to be associated with.

Tattersail sounds trigger happy... Note, these are PRE-GAME reactions, not real action submissions.
If he does this for real, he hits high and low - Day attacks a leader (which would fail) and Kills poor Obdi, his own Spearman
(barring preventative measures). Note, alliances don't prevent you from killing your own...

I might follow Okaros. Does he know me or is it the person below me that knows me? Maybe you won't tell me your trade secrets

Depending on a lot of luck in terms of alliances, targets chosen and lieutenant's protective actions etc, this game could be a fast bloodbath or a really drawn out affair. At least, as HD said, they all start off completely balanced.
In general, this is like most faction games except several of the roles have tidbits of information that give them a little bit of an edge when it comes to speculation. For example, a Lieutenant should realize that night attacks are probably different than day attacks given the wording of their PM. Leaders start off knowing how many clans there are (soon everyone will though, given alliances), even though they do not know anyone on their team. Generals start off knowing how wounding affects day and night actions.

Vengy, General under Gust Hubb. Good luck with your goals
So I have day attacks and then I can attack someone at night... Muhahahahahahahah... The bitches can suck it.
Lets see who I can kill first. WHoooooppppp
First thing first. Ummm what is my objective. Next I know Eloth so I don't want to target him so I guess i will try to alt GH and attack him during the day and then take him out at night.
Oh and I suppose I will now need to live past day one... Muhahahahaha

You are the foremost General Nagao Tamekage under Uesugi Fusayoshi (Eloth) of the Uesugi clan.
