Watched The Holdovers, and I liked it a lot. I didn't know that much about it, only some of the accolades and awards, and that Paul Giamatti plays a curmudgeon teacher at a private boarding school. I thought it was going to be a lot meaner than it is. Alexander Payne made Election, which I love but is one of the more cynical high school movies ever made. This one's like the inverse of that: instead of a few put-together-on-the-surface people making each other steadily worse, it's a few flawed/damaged people making each other better. There's a real strong 'found family' element to it, which I can imagine appealing to a board of SFF readers. I wouldn't say it's mind-blowing, there's a very deliberate throwback feeling to it, but it's very engaging and even heartwarming. I'd give it a good 4 stars out of 5.

Also Just Finished RED SISTER by Mark Lawrence.

I enjoyed it. The setting is the nicely original element, a planet where (sort of) humans found themselves facing an impending ice age and fended it off with an orbital mirror/moon that keeps a bare little chunk, 200 miles or so, free of ice and liveable. There are fantasy elements with underlying sf hints and it's all very well constructed to be intrguing. The characters are familiar archetypes well written. The MC, Nona Grey, is not wildly original in her 'lost child who discovers she has powers and a natural tendency to kick butt', nor is the 'school for magic warrior nuns' setting, but it all comes together so nicely within the wider setting that i'm very drawn in and enjoying it. FInished RED SISTER quickly and am a little past half of the sequel GREY SISTER already.

Yeah it's a different flavor than the Prince trilogies, but still great. Alls I got to say is Mr. Lawrence is one of the most reliably awesome finale writers around right now and this series is no exception.

Hah, western north south west. Nice. Hadn't thought of it that way.
Sometimes us from regional New South Wales refer to NSW as Newcastle Sydney Wollongong - the main metro areas that get all the attention from govt and the media, the rest of the state being "here be dragons" as far as they are concerned. :P

If it's all the same to you, I'd like 2022 to be very low on surprises ...
Except the lottery-winning kind. I'd like at least a big pleasant surprise there.

Great to hear you are ok! We are all fine, luckily we are mostly shut-ins anyway so the boy just spends more time doing Lego, Xbox and Ethan gamer TV on youtube. I've been getting through Netflix series and reading, same with the Mrs. Thanks for asking and if I don't see you round here for a while that would suck but I understand if you want time away. Take care mate.
