Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.
But he grew old-
This knight so bold-
And o'er his heart a shadow
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.
And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow-
"Shadow," said he,
"Where can it be-
This land of Eldorado?"
"Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied-
"If you seek for Eldorado!"

Um, that's a nice poem and all, but how does it have anything to do with SE? Forgive me if I'm just being too narrow minded in this, but I didn't even see very many parallels at all.

Hey Brett, if that is a poem of your own, you may want to post it in the Writing section of the forums.
If it does have something to do with SE and/or Toll the Hounds, please elaborate.
Just be careful where you post new threads.

--I believe that is Edgar Allen Poe.
When I read it, I thought of the Seguleh 2nd, but upon closer inspection I can't see that many parallels. It does talk about moons and shadows though...

Yes, it is a Poe poem. I'm sure SE's drawn inspiration from many varied sources of literature, every author does. If you feel that this poem in particular has had a significant impact, then explain why you think that is the case. Otherwise...

I cant see how this influenced steve in writing the malazan series. It has the words 'shadow' and 'moon' in it but thats a bit vague at best.
If ya want to see real influences for the writting of the malazan series pick up 'The Black Company' by Glen Cook as mentioned in the begining of RG. Heck the UK republishing of the black company even has a little blurb by Steve on the back singing its praises and going on how it changed fantasy. Not sure it did that but was certainly different
