Another small point I'd like to make - Cotillion uses a rope and a dagger. There could be an easy explanation why he hasn't got a dagger in his hand in your painting but I'd thought I'd point it out. The rope also looks quite like a whip :p

But your efforts are very nice, I like the children too for the aura and life they give to the painting.

Very nice :p
I especially like how you've depicted the warren of shadow. Just put in some stone, ruins and debris, and it's exactly how I pictured it in my head.

Other than what has already been noted about Cotillion himself, I'd say maybe you could give the kids some weapons (spears, crossbows, shields...)? Make it a little more malazanish...
The leader, his audience still,
considered their scholarly will.
He lowered his head
and with anguish he said,
"But how will we teach them to kill?"

I think it's great. There is an air of menace about COT that is very realistic.

Absolutley superb, well done, and much appreciated. I like his physique (is that how you spell that?), nice and slim just how I pictured him. Though if anything, it would be the shoulder thing that someone mentioned earlier. That isn't anything major at all though, not a problem I have with it, just nitpicking. The other thing would be the color of his cloths...I saw them maybe just a little darker, if not black.

One thing: He looks too battle-ready.
To me, he is always described as being wrapped in tight silks. It goes with what some others have mentioned - the shoulder guards.
It almost makes him look too solid.
And what's with the cape?

Anyway, despite that apparently long list of criticisms, I think it's an excellent painting, beyond most/all other renditions on the forum.

I picture Cotillion as being so laid back it's almost arrogant...like he doesn't need to be ready for action, because he's so damn good.

:p I wish I had NoK with me, but the quote was something like "his stance was almost bored - the carriage of absolute arrogance".

looking good so far. I quoted because I agree with the point about shoulder pads. They're not really something an assassin would wear and these in particular even more so. If they were leather, they could somehow work. If they were metal, they wouldn't work at all or they wouldn't work well. If you really want to have shoulder pads, I can find some good photo reference of plate armor (or you can google it..) that has working pieces of equipment..

I'm agreeing on the armor thing - it's way over the top. He should be dressed in some type of cloak/tunic, not shoulder plates and a cuirass. Nice stance, though. Just give him clothing that flows from that beautiful hood ...

If you look closely at the face, it seems as if he is wearing a mask of some sorts--at least that's what it looks like to me. The kids in the background are definetively a nice touch to the pic, though :p

I loved it. The only thing that doesn't mesh with my mental image is how young he looks.

Thanks for the comments, everyone :D

Cot always seemed the opposite sort of assassin to kalam: slim, effete, and superbly controlled. His mortal name was dancer and his ascendant name is a type of dance. his mannerisms appear to me to be almost effeminate sometimes.

I understood that this interpretation is not canon and other people may not share it (way less than i realized, apparantly), so i went for the middle ground, keeping the slender appearance (too much in spots, as pointed out. ill fix that later) but downplaying the effete.

It' not my definitive version of cotillion, but i got to a point where i didn't know how to change it that could reflect his character more.

About the Envy close-up. yeah, someone said in another thread that they pictured her as jolie, and it felt right, so i tried it out. The reference was a still from Alexander. I've never seen beowulf, unfortunately.

everyone stop asking for Rake pics in the rep comments :D
i'm not nearly good enough to do a pic of him that would even come close to doing him justice.

I agree with you about Cot's physique, I've always pictured him like that:)

I say, we all do a picture of Rake..it would be fun:p And the people would stop nagging you:D
