this might have, at one point or another, been brought up before. When Iccy cuts his wrists for the machine in RG does he die? It says "Indeed the machine was broken" after the whole thing settles down. Does that mean it didn't start back up or that it failed and killed Iccy?

We have no idea. I doubt it, though.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I don't think so, either. In RG, there is a reference that Icarium made the machine to last only so long, he would return and it would restore his memories or something close to this. I'm not sure who said it or what page it was on but it's there.

Of course, who knows how he'll react when the memories of his madness return--how will he bear his previos insanity?

probably not, depends on what he was trying to do. Seems unlikely things would lead up to that point for Iccy only for him to die like that (unless that has some longer lasting greater purpose or something :/)

RG, p 61, Kettle --"The dead told me. And they told me something else, too. They said the vast wheel is about to turn, one last time, before it closes. It closes, because it has to, because that's how he made it. To tell him all he needs to know. To tell him the truth.

"Tell who," Seren demanded
"The one who is coming. You'll see."

Guess we'll see if he can handle the truth now.

I just wonder where Iccy is going to turn up?

I think he'll end up becoming a weapon for the CG.

interesting point about lifeslayer being the CG opposite, deathslayer... now what the fuck do you think that means? i dont think anyone has brought this up yet, cuz deathslayer is a very strange title. icarium kills, he is lifestealer. CG is called the deathslayer? and he... heals? seriously say what? people have theorised hes the god of love more than once. could be he's what god would be like if god was actually omnipotent and benevolent.

at least before he was dragged out of whatever world/warren/dimension he's from and was crash landed on burn, severely bruising his existence.

crazy theory: malazan book of the fallen is the story of where god went after jesus.

Icariums machine moved him through time and space. A hundred thousand years back in time a rent is opened as the energies that seized the Jhag interfere with a ritual performed by the Cirkel. Like a leviathan Icarium falls to Korelri, destroying the continent, and subsequently needs to be bound by chains... :heyhey:

*head explodes*

I guess the common belief is whatever Icarium did may have gotten his memories back.

His whole story Arc would be pretty pointless if he were dead. So id say no he's not.

Icarium thinks on the nature of his predicament- and its apparent solution with this machine.

Reapers Gale pp872 said:

"To measure time, one must begin. To move futureward, one must root. Deep into the ground with blood.

I built this machine. This place that will forge my beginning. No longer outside the world. No longer outside time itself. Give me this, wounded or not, give me this. If K'rul can, why not me?"

K'rul forged a beginning, I suppose...

But it appears damaged, ravaged, ironically, by time.

Reapers Gale pp871 said:

"A wound, yes. His machine was wounded. Its pieces had been twisted, shifted out of position. Ages had passed since he had built it, so he should not be surprised. Would it still work? He was no longer so sure."

And this is what it does to spectators... doesn't bode well for Iccy's memories...

Reapers Gale pp873 said:

"The white fire enveloped him.
And sucked out from his mind every memory he possessed.
The thing that died there a short time later was not Rautos Hivanar.
...
[In] that time, all who were devoured by the white fire emptied their lives into it. Every memory, from the pain of birth to the last moment of death.
The machine was indeed broken."

So Iccy needs another solution. My money's on cutting a deal with CG, who may have some knowhow. But that's just speculation.

At least he's only gaining the memories of the victims and not their souls as well. The consequences of bottling up that many souls is hazardous to your health. Hmmm my guesses are on silchas and the short-tails, and the CG via Kallor and his knowledge of kchain technology perhaps is the path to getting the machine fixed?

They call Icarium the Lifestealer not because of something he's done in the past, it's because they had forseen the effect of this machines activation at the height of the seventh closure perhaps and what he will become afterwards? Maybe he gains a taste for life and starts to demand sacrifical worship from his reclusive island worshippers via his little stalker guy in lether...okay that last bit is a joke. :p

Maybe he'll be the Mad God plus! new edition having absorbed the combined memories and life of so many unfortunates. If he doesn't go completely crazy at the beginning and can actually come to any sanity he can probably use all those memories as a foundation to build up his scattered recollections and half memories that swim in his own skull. He might come to horrible horrible sanity, far beyond anyone and build a machine to solve the whole kchain matron spell issue and reheal Shadow and create endless pots of gold that spring out giant rainbows....errr.

"Maybe he'll be the new mad god plus!"

Seed, I love that.

Be even funnier if they trapped him in an altar.

On the references to the crippled god being deathslayer, I think this is just a direct reference to him brining Rhulad back from the dead again and again. Nothing really mysterious about it.

Good point, of course, it could be a future reference...perhaps the CG ending the idea of death....crazy theory I know.

I like to think that SE couldn't kill off Icarium without some sweet final scene between him and Mappo. If he DOES kill him off cold-heartedly I'll probably burn all my books and cry for a week.

I haven't read any of the books in months and this stupid thread is already making me sad about those two. Curse you Steve Erikson!
