...firstly, the whole Black Freighter thing. What was the point? It doesn't work as a metaphor for anything going on in the main story. It reads like Alan Moore was on a particularly heinous LSD trip back in the 70s and decided to write a pirate story gone horribly awry.

...okay, the World is in horrible shape, nations are at war, nukes could fly any time... so hey, let's kamikazie teleport a big frikkin fake alien giant squid into NYC, where its 'psychic death scream' will murder millions. The world will unite to fight our new telepathic squid alien overlords who don't really exist.:eek:


Look, mid cold war, if a giant death squid alien suicide bomb appeared in the US they would have blamed the commies, and if it appeared in the USSR they would have blamed the imperialist americans with resultant nukefeste.

Plus, Ozzy managed to actually CREATE a massive fake alien octopus go-boom thingy in the first place, AND a working teleporter... so i have trouble with the notion anyone who could do that couldn't come up with a better way to make the world hold hands and sing in perfect harmony.

Besides, how much of a threat are the alien bulk suicide calamari in the first place if they die every time they arrive somewhere...?

I'm kind of hoping the film actually rejigs Ozzy's master plan into something a wee bit more logical. Because otherwise this may suffer from a classic case of Hollywood-can't-end-a-film-to-save-their-lives syndrome.

Plus giant alien psychic suicide seafood is just silly.

Alan Moore has produced some great work, but that doesn't make his opinions that great. V for Vendetta was a very good movie, and he hated that, for instance.

I have lukewarm feelings about both the VfV flic and the comic. LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN (both volumes) is sheer comic genius but the movie made me want to stab myself repeatedly in the brain with an eraser just to remove the memory. I havenèt seen either, but opinions on FROM HELL, flic AND comic, vary.

Outside AMoore's tortured soul creations, I have, however, seen and read 300 and SIN CITY, and i thought both flics were excellent recreations of the comics. Argueably, if weère going to compare apples and kumquats, the 300 movie was better that the gn.

Point being, it's really, really hard to compare works in the two mediums, even where one is based off the other - there are, literally, thousands of comic adaptations of flics out there that are absolute crap.

Moore has a history with the film industry, and it's mostly a bad one. His works are picked up by producers and directors who really do have a love for the comics, but then Hollywood gets it's highly toxic tentaclaws into things and sooner or later Superman is wearing cargo pants and Batman has nipples. On the outside of his costume.

I get why Moore and others are worried about this. WATCHMEN is a very complex work. And before SIN CITY and 300, i would have said there was no way in from hell (pun intended) it could be made to work. But the trailer gives me just a teeny, tiny bit of hope.

On the other hand, the book is one of the best things I've ever read (graphic novel or normal novel).

Good except I saw this summary on the site I got the links from;

"Zack confirmed he will be cutting parts of the story for more action, and that the directors cut DvD was just a rumor. Also, the guy playing Veidt talked Zack into giving the character a backstory where his parents are nazi's and he speaks with a german accent. Shit is going to suck."

I am now panicking like crazy.

I dunno - WATHCMEN is a brilliant work but there are huge chunks of story that are completely disposable -

the Black freighter i ref'd above, Roscharch's psychiatrist's back story, the newspaper vendor and the kid, the lesbian break-up, the missing artists... the main characters (Sil, Owl, Ros, etc.) never even touch on these storylines. So if you're going to reduce a twelve part series to 2 and so hours, those things can go. They're local colour but really, if you reread the entire work (which it so happens i did this past weekend), you quickly see what are the most engrossing storylines and what are local colour - a lesbian couple, a black kid hanging with a white newsvendor, this was edgy (ish) in the early 80, now it's nothing unusual

As for the rumour re Veidt, well, his backstory was always thin ("I grew up knowing i was special...."), so hey, nazis, why not?

but there are inherent problems with the source material's Veidt's Diabolical Master Plan and just how the smartest man in the world came up with something as silly as giant interstellar suicide psychic sushi.

So i'm comfortable with it being messed with. Besides, Veidt's whole blond hair blue eyed ubermennsch thing practically screamed 'Heil Hitler', silly costume notwithstanding.
