Would someone remind me... re: Karsa & Torvald

I'm about 30% through TtH and I can't remember what happened with Torvald and Karsa in previous books- I know that Karsa and he escaped slavery together and ended up on a ship for 7 cities where Torvald took care of Karsa and taught him Malazan (or some language) - but I don't recall what happened when Torvald got to 7C - I don't remember him going with Karsa and Leoman? Where did they split ways? What was the last we heard of Torvald prior to this book?
