Still working on the background. The Chain will be crossing the light-colored plain in the middle, but the focus will be on two Wickan outriders and a cattle dog waiting on the foreground rock shelf. Still not sure if I like the layout (probably should have done something more up-close to the Chain), but it's too late to change now ...

Edit: Canvas size is 24" by 48", to give a sense of scale.

If you look closer, Xander, you'll see it's a canvas, on an easel. So technically, he's using paint.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Unfortunately, I'm way too drunk to think of a witty answer to this ... but, yeah, it's oils. That's why it might take me until about when TTH comes out to finish.

I think it would be really neat to have the chain of dogs cresting the ridge in the foreground....like have dukier or coltaine painted right up front, maybe bent too...and then have a less detailed column of the chain of dogs trailing off to the right down in the valley in the background.

If you don't want to put main chars up there, like you said, maybe just an anonymous horse archer or cattle dog. Having something on that ridge would give a real sense of scale to the chain of dogs down in the valley below.

Make sure to add wagons, herds, outrider units away from the main group and...of course...lots and lots of peasants.

EDIT: Another thought, it would be neat to have dukier and bent up on the ridge alone just observing and documenting....or one of the wickan wizards casting a blessing??

I like the edit idea in particular. Just pick the idea which will work best and is most time efficient too.

That's certainly an impressive start

I also like the idea of having duiker documenting in the foreground. And a cattle dog or two, probably :D

Looks pretty good, I hope you get around to finishing it. My two small suggestions would be that the horse looks a little fat (I always pictured wickan mounts as being lithe) and that you could maybe get a better idea of the scale of the chain if it extended to the horizon instead of off the side of the picture, but I'm not sure what the scale of the people in the background will be, so that might be overdoing it.
