I'm not sure if anyone is really interested, but there is a character in Catch 22 by Joseph Helier called Ex-P.F.C. Wintergreen who spends his time digging perfect holes and filling them in again! The similarities are too striking for Erikson to not have directly lifted the idea.

Has anyone read anything else that has so obviously inspired a character or event in the Malazan books? Just wondering like :D

(also, I highly recommend Catch 22 if you haven't already read it, it's really rather hilarious)

Borrowing this thread, even though it is danger from being moved to the Inn, what was up with the baby skeletons.

I understand that they were most likely KCCM infected children, but... they started moving when they were uncovered. What the hell was that about?

I could actually imagine Telorast and Curdle messing with the Bonehunters but they were shown later, still in their lizard bodies... I think.

I've nothing really to add to what mezla says, but I want to ask is Crump one of the Bole brothers from the Mott irregularrs, he goes by the name of Jambler Bole I believe.

Yeah, I thought about putting it in the Inn but I'm genuinely interested to hear if there are any other obvious inspirations for Erikson's work out there.

As for skeletons moving, wasn't it a product of Sinn's magic?

But why would what ever Sinn did with all the power from the ice, reanimate the skeletons?

Well other minor or lesser inspirations would be:

Black Company = Bridgeburners and Bonehunters
Croaker = Duiker

Well I think all the Tiste Races are an attempt to avoid Elves, but in many ways represent the absence of actual elves so much that they become a way cooler version of elves, hard to articulate what I am getting at here.

hmmm.. hte only ones that strike me as "elf-like" are the Liosan...

the Andii are too cool to be elves, and the Edur... lol, dunno, but they're not elves..

I would be amazed if it is a homage but the BB's saying "First in Last out" is also the moto of the Greek Anti-Radar Air force unit. Go figure.
Catch 22 is a great book. I laughed to tears.

Lots from Black Company:

WJ and Korlat are very close to Lady and Croaker

The fight against the Panion Domin is very similar to the ganging up of the empire and the rebels against the dominator. (uneasy truce to fight mutual enemy)

Father Tree is too much like the Azath to be coincidence.

I am sure there are many others.

I agree about the catch-22 link, and it being a great book. I also agree about the inspiration coming from Black Company, impressive because it doesn't come off as outright theft.

mentioned this elsewhere, but Anomander Rake and Dragnipur is clearly based on
Elric of Melnibone and Stormbringer.

I kinda think they're are some warhammer references like the whole ascendant thing. Kinda like how chaos space marines ascend to become demon prices...spotty but I can see it.

I remember Erikson commenting on people comparing Rake to various elves and what not, and being displeased with it. He was also sorry that he gave Rake, the son of darkness, white hair :D

Lol!

Are you sure his epic song wasn't from a movie or something?

Ahem...

Shilly-dan the dark eyed man
Pokes his head up for a look round
Hilly-man the black-clawed man
Came up the well for a look round

"Well and and!" Says the twelve-toed man
And when bounding bound down
Still-me-hand the dead-smile man
Went bounding bound down he did bound

Shilly-dan the red water man
Croaks and kisses her brow
Hilly-man the blue-cocked man
Strokings and blessings t'thank her now!

I can see his point, but look at the evidence:

Elric - royal family member of a dying race, that includes powerful sorcereros.
Anomander - son of mother dark, leader of a dying race, that includes powerful sorcerors.

Elric - Albino
Anomander - white haired.

Stormbringer - captures souls, killing the opponent in the process, giving their strength to the wielder
Dragnipur - captures souls, killing the opponent in the process, chaining their strength to the wagon.
