According to RG,
Spoiler
But the GH have their own Destriant, Mortal Sword and Shield Anvil. Is there a connection, and if so, what is it? Can't be a coincidence.

Edit: Damnit, i'm really sorry about that. I've fixed it now.

Why did you post this in the BH forum?

If you make a post in a forum containing spoilers from the later books you can put it in a spoiler box. The mods prefer that you don't make any spoilers at all though. That's why there are forums for each book.

Spoilerboxes are made by typing
Spoiler

If you take a look at old threads in the BH forum, the apparent duality of the mercenary company has been discussed. It's not explained, but most likely there are two of every position because they worship two gods, a pair or wolves. Interestingly, if'm not mistaken, I remember the positions being held by a woman in one company and a man in the other.

Hurry up and edit your post before you ruin RG for a toc fanboy.

Alternatively, someone once raised the possibility of the GH leaders getting their titles between the GSs dying and the GH meeting the BHs.

It's not possible though since the GH have existed for years.

Ah, but they could have been a company devoted to the Wolves, but not the wolves 'favoured' company. Thus the investment titles were bestowed upon the GSs. Then since the GSs were completely eliminated with zero chance of recruiting back up to strength again, the wolf gods shifted their favouritism to the GHs.

Of course that leaves some issues with Toc (rejected as Mortal Sword? who knows...)

That is possible... We'll probably never know.

Aren't they both the same group? The Grey's were recruiting from the Tenescowri in MoI, of which Toc was in, so then they all up and leave Genebackis and end up getting smoked in Lether. Maybe I read it wrong... which is a distinct possibility.

The two groups we're talking about are the Grey swords from MoI and the Grey Helms we meet in BH. These two groups are seperate companies and as far as we know haven't had any contact.

The reason to why you don't see the perish (as the grey helms are also called) in RG is that Tavore sent them around the Lether continent to make their approach from the east.

Well, since I was the one who came up withthe theory of "transmitting the blessing of the wolves thing", I should explain it, lol
Essentially, the gist of it is, the wolves sent The Grey Swords visions to go east to Letheras. following that, the wolves withdrew their protection fromt he company once it got slaughtered. at this point (approx. 1 year prior to Y'ghatan), the Grey Helms of Perish were chosen to be the Company of the House of War.
Since SE doesn't give us precise dates, the theory COULD work--the only time constraint we have is "following the Edur conquest" for the destruction of Grey Swords. since we don't have actual dates in years, we can assume that the events in books 1 + 2 of RG overlap with BH somewhat.... lol, sure it's a stretch, but then again, timeline's not one of the strong points of MBotF....

That's what we think. We really don't know..

OK I see, I always considered the Grey Helms in Bonehunters to just be "The Perish". Probably just a coincidence they both worship the same gods. Or perhaps members from Perish were the originals and the Swords in MOI, chose Togg and Fanderay after Fener got pulled down.

I really get the impression that the Perish have been followers of T&F for awhile.

Another thing to note that I never really picked up on before is that the Grey Swords all got killed in the Awl area, and now the Grey Helms are headed there as well. Maybe this is leading to something nifty...

Sorry about the spoilers thing. That was close...

And yes, the GH have been active for a long time. remember, their ritual was in casting for 2 years. Enough time, methinks, to take up worship of The Lord 'n' lady of the Wolves.

Speaking of which, where are the Perish now? In RG: damn spoiler bars aren't working, just avert your eyes.

The Adjunct said they are east, with the Khundryl (man they've come a long way). Doing what, i wonder? That's where the GS were, and I doubt the Adjunct would forgo their use unless she... or THEY... had a good reason.

I hope the Khundryl make it through myself. :D

Does anyone know the timeframe (exactly) between the mercs fighting the Pannion and now? I think the following of the Wolves would have had that much time to build- possibly enough time for the leaders of the Perish to convert their entire state into a pledged army and navy- and work that HUGE portal ritual?
Tough call though.

Also, groundlessly, I would assert that the new House of War probably has plenty of MS-Dest-SA combos floating around. I mean, there's a group for Treach, why shouldn't there be one for each of the wolves?

Didn't quick Ben recognize some of them? I don't have the book with me, but I thought that when the 14th meets up with the GH that QB recognizes them or something. If I remember right he said something along the line of (to Kalam): "I recognize these...Perish." To which Kalam was wholly unsurprised and QB continued with something like: "If we ever end up besieged, pray for the attackers." I know that isn't too acurate but I distinctly remember the convorstation. Would this mean that the GS and the GH have met up?

Am I stupid and dreamed this up?

Also, I think that each of the Wolves have their own company, one for the male and one for the female. So they can each have a mortal sword, a Sheild Anvil, and Destrient right?

He recognized them because he noticed the same traits that the ones from MoI had. The ones Toc took over in Anasters body. The almost 'templar' attitude.

Each of the wolves have their own company, as you stated. It is notable that the MS, SA, and Dest were different sexes from their counterparts in the other company.

you see, I'm not a fan of that theory, b/c then each company should be sworn to a single wolf, so "MS of Togg", or "Destriant of Fanderey" is what we'd hear.
Since all we hear are "the wolves of Winter" and they don't play favourites, I'm gonna look at Grey helms as replacement for Grey Swords, untill proven otherwise....

i think what QB means is that if one grey company could batter a hundreds thousand strong force in a siege with only seven thousand dedicated soldiers, what could a grey company with over thirty thousand do?

and i like the idea of their being a company for each togg and fanderay, its too bad the MS, Dest, and SA for each company arent gender exclusive, cuz that would just be too cool.

also i think the GS should become soletaken wolves, you know, the ones that ate their hearts morphing into soldiers. not likely, but unbelievably sweet.

Notice how each position had, if you include both armies, 1 person of each gender...

aye, that is a very pertinent observation.

As to the question of what could 30k Grey mercs do, I would argue that (based on my previous theory that they're recent converts) they'd be considerably less trained, skilled, and less experienced. That probably helped them get owned by the Letherii. That and numerical disadvantage.

The hundreds of thousands was largely composed of unarmed cannibals.
