OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

The Felix Castor series IS indeed a good spot for a fix...I really enjoyed the differences between him and Butcher. Castor is darker and just as witty in a very self deprecating way.

Storm Front- Jim Butcher (Haven't read anything by him before but have seen him and his books mentioned here and from a work friend so I thought I'd give him a read though I was looking for the first Codex Alera book)

I'm about half way through the first book of the Codex Alera.

It is a completely different kind of story than the Urban Fantasy of the Dresden Files. It is also really solid fantasy telling. I am amazed at how awesome the magic system is. The idea of the furies is not exactly original, but the detail and execution is amazing. The furies really are like Pokemon.

If you do pick up the Dresden Files stick with it, the first two books are mediocre. It's from the third one and onward that the series becomes great.

I can't wait until a dragon shows up in the Dresden books, so I can jump up and say "Dragonfucknuts, yeah!" without betraying my appreciation for Caine.

There was one in Grave Peril, wasn't there?

There was. A Dragon God even it would seem. Or something like it.

No, please, don't stop. There's not nearly enough drama on the board lately. I miss the old trolls.

ALERA gets SO good. Book 1 of Alera to me is equivalent to STORM FRONT...it's good as an intro, but stuff only REALLY starts to cook in the second book...and the third book will blow you away...from there on out it's amazing!

The thing I am really loving is the implications. Like the big bads of the Dresden Files, you really have to wonder at the crazy strength of the First Lord and similar god like crafters. Not to mention the idea of mountain furies and storm furies.

I've been putting off buying some books lately with tCG coming out and doing my reread as the new books would just get in the way...

Well I decided to splash out today...

Shadowrise & Shadowheart by Tad Williams
The Heroes by Abercrombie
Retribution Falls & Black Lung Captain by Chris Wooding
The Lies of Lock Lamora & Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch
The Fort by Bernard Cornwell

Plus I also paid for my copy of tCG

Yes... That should keep me busy for a while...

Just bought:

House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski (colour edition - Win!!)

The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie; (half price - also Win!!)

Pale Fire,by Vladimir Nabokov

A pretty good haul, even if I say so myself...
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Love this book. Nabokov can write better in his second language than most people can in their first.

I'm definitely going to give Butcher a read and I still want to track down the first Codex Alera book to start that series but due to the praise I'll move Storm Front up in my reading. I've been impatiently waiting for my copy of Stonewielder to show up as I'm about to finish Ilium and was trying to time ending that with getting SW. If SW doesn't show up in the next couple of day I'll probably read Omen(from the Fate of the Jedi series) as I'll finish that off quickly and hopefully get to SW when it comes and wrap that up right before TCG.

The last books I did buy before my self-imposed online buying-ban was the first 3 of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice series as I've been meaning to get to that for awhile now.

So- with SW, TCG coming soon and buying Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy, Martin's books, potentially starting Butcher's stuff, reading up on the Fate of the Jedi series, GGK's Tigana and The Last Light of the Sun, The Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, plus the other stuff I've bought and the numerous re-reads I want to get to I think I'm set for awhile. :)

One thing I know is that if Butcher is done with the Alera World I will most def cry....

I WANT MORE.

Butcher has gone on record (at the Butcher forums) that he WILL at some point down the road revisit the world of ALERA, 1000 years after the events of FLF and have a more Steampunky Alera. But he said that is far down the road if it happens, probably after he finishes Dresden. He HAS said that he and an author friend are planning and writing a new series about the last human city and the palace of the Titans or sumthin' to do with gods. Sounds cool.

That sounds like something I would love...I'll have to jump into that once the crack has run dry.

I can't sing the praises of the series enough. By book 3 it gets into later Dresden-revelations-style territory and is simply a juggernaut of awesome.

Absolutely agreed. Nabokov's use of language is extraordinary. The way he puts words together is utterly breathtaking. I read Lolita last year; now there's a challenging book.

Well I broke my Online-Book-Buying-Ban the other day because I got a really good deal on a Groupon coupon with Barnes and Noble and ordered the first 3 books of Butcher's Codex Alera series.

Then today I spent my off-day using in-store coupons at Borders and Half-Priced Books. I got:

When Pride Still Matters - by David Maraniss about Vince Lombardi
A Cruel Wind - by Glen Cook. I wanted to get the first book or two of the Black Company series but no luck at HPB for those.
The Fountainhead - by Ayn Rand. Read as a teenager and I think I will appreciate it more now.
Full Moon/Grave Peril - by Jim Butcher. I got the first one and have yet to start it but when I get discounts I tend to buy the first parts of series so when I get into them I can go full steam into them.

If I buy the car I've been hoping to get this week I won't be able to buy more books for awhile but I'm fully stocked up on multiple series and other books I've been meaning to get to.

I just noticed this morning: My "To-Read" pile has two books I bought in it, and 3 books from a publisher for reviewing...that's it. When the hell did my pile dwindle to such numbers?!

LOL

Still re-reading DoD in prep for TcG....but will be diving into THE HEROES after that.
