So I looked him up on Wikipedia...do I need to read the Ian Cormac series first too? Or are they stand-alone in the same universe Alistair Reynolds-style?

Yeah, all his books are in the same universe (except for The Cowl, I guess), but the Cormac books (which are the majority) are set a few hundered years prior to the Spatterjay ones. You don't need to read them first though - there are a few minor cross-references, but nothing important that I can remember:)

The War of the World by H.G. Wells.

Just could not restrain myself. I bought it for £2 in a second hand shop, very nice small hardback edition.

I got The Road today as well. It's half price in Waterstones, so you can get it for about £3.98 at the moment.

Endless Things by John Crowley - the 4th and final book in his Aegypt sequence - it's only been 20 years since I read the first one...
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Light - M John Harrison
Revelation Space - Alastair Reynolds

For some reason, in a very science-fictiony mood of late. However, to counterbalance it:

Ship of the Line - CS Forester
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Werd. Well not hate, but y'know...don't like it.

RG did arrive on Monday. Nothing since. Will try to find White Knight when I'm over in the UK next week.

Thoughts on the first two books here.

A frustrating series. So many good elements about it but then so much other stuff which severely undermines it. However, the strongest thing about it that I recall is that it does get better as it goes along with the fourth volume (as far as I got last time) being the best of the ones I read. The other three are sitting on the shelf waiting to be read as well.

Actually, looks like I've a fair amount of rereading to do. Looking forward to a JV Jones re-read next year in advance of the summer 2008 publication of A Sword from Red Ice in paperback, and will probably kick off the Wheel of Time re-read once we know when Book 12 is coming out. Assuming late 2008/early 2009, I'd probably have to start that next summer as well (since review copies will be arriving intermittently as well). Might do a ASoIaF reread before ADWD comes out, although that might get squeezed out due to time constraints.

That's a lot of re-reading  ;) I'm hoping to get round to re-reading 'Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone' (Greg Keyes) before 'The Born Queen' comes out...

Was in Scotland and spent some money on buying:

'The Skinner' by Neal Asher. First of his that I've read and I was hooked/impressed. Similar to Reynolds.

'Red Seas under Red Skies' by Scott Lynch. Good book, but had its flaws much like tLoLL.

A Nick Hornby, a Bill Bryson and a book of writing on Glasgow as well.

Saw The Name of the Wind on sale for dirt cheap, so I bought it. No idea when I'll read it, but hope it's good...

The ARC of Paul McAuley's Cowboy Angels ('our' USA enforces its value systems onto millions of alternate Americas in parallel universes) arrived today. It looks pretty interesting, especially as McAuley seemed to have disappeared off the radar after causing a storm of interest in his big high-concept hard SF novels about a decade ago.

It'll have to wait a bit though. I'd forgotten that Kate Elliott's The Burning Stone is the bit where her series actually gets pretty decent, and the fourth volume, Child of Flame, is probably the best book in the series. I also have some Mieville and Esslemont that may have to take priority.

Picked up The Swarm by Frank Schatzing as it's now out here in TPB. It's described as SciFi/horror/thriller genre and has been at #1 on bestseller lists in Germany forever according to the cover. Not a bad read, actually -- first book in a long time that has given me nightmares. Fookin' marine worms!
Shaken, not stirred.
