I was curious about this as well, so I checked your link QT. I was in until the phrase "blood drinking blowjob scene". Now I'm slowing leaving the room.

This does not scare me off. It probably should because "Holy Hannah!". But I've seen enough solid reviews to be wiling to give at least this one a try. It all depends on how it's handled really, or what the context is. We will see.

When you get to this scene you're going to have to share some context. I cannot possibly see a scenario in which that is essential to the plot or character arc, lol.

I forgot about this ask. I'll throw it in spoilers as it does reveal a sort of minor early character plot point. But it IS plot relevant funnily enough.

Dunno if this is the right thread but I got a good haul for my birthday last month.

Got the first book in the Licanius series on ebook.
Got the Red Queen series by Mark Lawrence. Do I need to read the Thorns series again or will it stage by itself?
Got the Wayfarer series by Becky Chambers. Really looking forward to delving this series.
Got "The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle" which appears to be a time traveling murder mystery of some kind where the guy trying to work out the murder keeps coming back as one of the other people who were there. Looks exactly my kind of thing.

My wife got me some Waterstones gift cards and the promise of time to browse the shop to look for books and maybe spend some time in the cafe there. Probably one of my favourite presents ever tbh. I know Amph already recommended a series to me (Crimson Empire?) but if anyone has others I'm happy to take all into consideration :)

Nah, you're good. There are a few nods at Thorns, but nothing you won't get the inference of.

I've only read Book 1, but it was a really nice slice-of-life type space adventure with nicely compelling characters.

It depends on what you are looking for... you can read Red Queen standalone, there is no problem with that and I think a lot of people will say there is no reason to go back and read Broken Empire again... but... for me, Red Queen compliments and expands out on everything you read before in Broken Empire. There are a fair few nods that you wouldn't notice/realise without having BE fresh in your mind. They just go so well together reading one series after the other. But I love these books so take my thoughts for what they are, total fanboy!

Man, I'm jealous you get to read that series for your first time, Jal and Snorri are legendary!

This.

Lawrence's BEST characters by a long stretch. I am also jealous Tiste will be reading them for the first time.

Like imagine Harry Flashman teamed up with a Giant straightlaced Viking.

Thanks both! I read Broken Empire ages ago (I remember there was a character called Simeon!) but I just don't really have time to read it again on top of everything else...

Seconding the reco. RED QUEEN'S WAR is so so very great.

You do not need to read THORNS again. The handful of references are minor and likely obvious, and if you miss them the story remains great.

Bought all of Carol Berg's Rai-Kirah series (TRANSFORMATION, REVELATION, RESTORATION) aka the books series with the atrocious cover on the first book that even Carol is embarrassed about.

But yeah, I adored her standalone SONG Of THE BEAST, so I've decided to start reading the rest of her work.

Ok my wife got me Waterstones gift cards for my birthday and I'm going to head there later this week to buy some new books.

Can anyone remind me of that book that a few of you were raving about a few months ago and someone called it "competency porn" about the group of dudes running the empire? I like the sound of this :)

Amph recommended a series to me but I know they don't have that series in the store...

Any other recommendations? Kind of interested in standalone novels but am happy to think of series too. Also considering graphic novels tbh I've got Sandman, Y: The Last Man, Kingdom Come, Dark Knight Returns...

Thoughts welcome!

Welcome.

I recall looking into it when the raving was going on, but the only physical copy I could find was hardcover for $42, so I was all like nope. I only looked into the most obvious places though - amazon, barnes & noble. Hopefully it will come out in paper back eventually.

Ordered Timothy Snyder's "Bloodlands", b/c there was no longer one in any bookstores around i could bike to.

In order to get free delivery, I tossed the 3rd "Worldbreakers" book by Kameron Hurley

Since they've once again changed the covers to a book series I was collecting and I worried that I'd not be able to get them all in the covers I'm collecting...

I got the final 6 Patrick O'Brian Aubrey & Maturin books. So that's all 20 I own from either gifts or self purchases in a year (I've only read up to 6 so far). I think the only other author I went all-in on that hard was Michelle West.

It's nice to own them all and not have to worry that these specific covers will be scarce when I eventually get to those last volumes.

I did not get 21, THE FINAL UNFINISHED VOYAGE OF JACK AUBREY, as I'm not entirely sure I want to read a half finished one yet...LOL

Only have one book left in Cameron's Masters and Mages series and not yet convinced on following up Chakraborty's City of Brass or Fonda Lee's Jade City with the rest of those series, so I ordered the first books in a few other series today (mostly off of reviews here). Also pre-ordered Naomi Novik's Golden Enclaves - last in her scholomance series. Considered pre-ordering the sequel to Kate Elliot's Unconquerable Sun because that was great fun as well, but the publication date seems to have slipped a couple times so I held off. Books ordered:

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Beneath the Rising by Premee Mohamed
The Grey Bastards by Jonathan French
Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer
Middlegame by Seanan McGuire

For what it's worth from moi, the rest of the series just gets better and better. I very enjoyed it. If you enjoyed CITY enough to consider KINGDOM OF COPPER even a little, i'd recommend.
