The Thousand Names (Shadow Campaign Book 1) by Django Wexler. A total shot in the dark, but I liked the sound of it - plus the author sounds like he should be a villain in a Resident Evil game.

I've done exactly the same (though I did see a couple of good reviews, so not totally in the dark). About halfway in and it's fucking awesome. Very much reminds me of the Fiddler/Tavore part of House of Chains, except with Napoleonic-era tech.

Apparently the book (a detective novel) is SO good that a UK reporter got suspicious that an unheard of debut author could put out such quality on theior first go...

So basically the truth came out because some reporter is an idiot?

By which I mean the notion that a debut author can't put out extraordinary work is absurd.

Good on her for doing it though. I remember saying to someone not long after HP finished that she should give exactly that a try.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Good to know! I'll probably make a start on it soon.

Indeed. I thought the same thing. Debut author's knock it out of the park all the time. In fact I'll wager it happens more often than seasoned author's.

And yeah, I think she was pleased to be able to just write a book and have it come out without all the expectations and hubbub...and stand on its own merits without having to stand on the shoulders of HP.

I hear tell she wished it had stayed secret longer...but having read the first few chapters (great stuff so far BTW!)...it's definitely her style. Though a part of me wonders if I could have guessed her style without knowing it was her.

I should not be allowed in bookstores. Especially right after payday. Happened to be downtown, decided to take a gander @ the Indigo in Eatons Centre.

the haul:
"King of thorns" by MNark Lawrence--now in mmpb.
"The apocalypse codex" (LAundry files no4) by Charles stross--also now in mmpb.

"Dreaming void" by Peter Hamilton--another sci-fi series i'm starting. When will I learn?

"Veteran" by Gavin Smith--more sci-fi, seemed interesting, but basically a random buy.

Just bought Unfettered by Terry Brooks, Sanderson, Rothfuss, Jacqueline Carey, Naomi Novik, Salvatore, Peter Brett, Mark Lawrence, and D. A. Durham.

What convinced me to buy it was that it contained the back story on Bao from A Memory of Light, plus it's pack'n some badass authors.

Edit: Been reading this a little and there are a ton more writers than what I named. Also: did not dig Rothfuss's contribution (and yes, I've read his other works).

My paperback copy of Forge of Darkness has arrived (I read it on Kindle on release). Looks good on the shelf (the book, not the Kindle)!

Bakker's The Darkness That Comes Before was in the same package from Amazon.

You got Emperor this early?

Minor (on the international scale) book companies tend to ignore release dates of anything but the largest most strictly enforced release.

Emperor has been available for a week over here.

I noticed the Kindle price for Caliban's War had dropped from £9 to £4.49, so I snapped it up.

Was in a UBS over the weekend and spotted the entire TERMINATOR follow-up trilogy (INFILTRATOR, RISING STORM, FUTURE WAR). I didn't know it was written by SM Stirling, whose work i generally really like.
At $1 each, i couldn't not buy them.

... anyone read these?
