Yeah, that one, I got it today too. Debating whether or not to reread it, as I finished it really damn fast.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I bought Dusk by Tim Lebbon just the other day.

Erikson and Kearney both give this book some thumbs up.

Kearney: "I read Dusk in a couple of days, unable to put it down. I like this guy - he's made himself an utterly convincing world which is wholly his own. There are echoes of folk such as Erikson - that hard-edged, unflinching way with a story - but he's a unique voice.....This is fantasy for grown-ups - and the ending made my jaw drop. This is an excellent book, and I would not say that unless I meant it."

Erikson: "An exquisitely written, unique world is revealed in this novel, a world inhabited by flesh and blood people rendered with often brutal honesty and clarity of vision. It's rare indeed to witness the conventions of fantasy so thoroughly grabbed by the throat and shaken awake the way Tim Lebbon has done with Dusk. Even more enticing, this first novel in the series concludes with a jaw-dropping finale, ,and for what it's worth, such a reacion from me is not a common occurrence."

Indeed, Kearney and Erikson simultaneously had their jaws fall straight to the floor at the ending. Also, K.J. Bishop and Graham Joyce had some good things to say as well. As for me, I don't care for the book after the first few pages. Maybe I will try harder after I finish AFFC.

I was going to purchase Dusk as well until I read the sample on Lebon's website. One of the bloggers here confirmed my suspicions when he described the book as a "marginal effort."

Dusk ismargianl. Firmly better than a lot of efforts into High Fantasy, but why lebbon's wanted to throw his hat into this ring baffles me. I wanted to like it (i'm a fan of Lebbon), but it simpy doesn't seperate itsef from being more than a dark shannara with a couple of good ideas.

Some Arthur Machen works I found; a 1926 edition signed by Machen of Dreads And Drolls, and the first editon of The Hill of Dreams (1907).

I'm also rounding out my Mishima Yukio collection by snagging a 1975 editon of Acts of Worship - Mishima Yukio is simply a god.

Today I also got my copies of Michael de Larrabeiti's Borribles (that Brys has been pudhing on me) collected in 700+ pages, as well as a copy of the first edition of the first book (1976)

Went on a comic (all but one Hardcover) binge off of some rec's from forum members elsewhere:

The Name of the Game by Will Eisner
Crisis on Infinite Earths (Absolute)
The World's Greatest Super-Heroes by Paul Dini, and Alex Ross
New X-Men Volume 1 by Grant Morrison,
Lucifer by Mike Carey
Powers Volume 1 by Brian Michael-Bendis,
Seven Soldiers by Grant Morrison
Runaways by Brian K. Vaughn
Fable by Bill Willingham
The Book of Ballads by Charles Vess

Royal Flash by George MacDonald Fraser. It was 99p when bought with a copy of The Times and George R.R. Martin heavily recommends the series, so what the hell?

Clever they put the second book in the offer, as it encourages people to buy the first one, Flashman.

For those not in the know these are historical novels starring the bullying, cowardly Flashman, the nemesis of Tom Brown in Tom Brown's Schooldays. The Flashman series (currently standing at twelve books published between 1966 and 2005) follows his adventures in the British Army in the 19th Century as he somehow comes out smelling of roses of every situation he gets into. Think of Bernard Cornwell but starring a character with less courage than Edmund Blackadder.

Are they still publishing Magician in two volumes in the USA? What gives? By today's fantasy standards 700 pages is average for a single-volume novel. Can you actually get Magician in single-volume editions?

Not quite as great as Farseer, but still up there. It takes a while for stuff to happen in the beginning, but once it does and you're off and running it settles into a nice pace.
