Blindsight is one of the best, if not the best first contact sci fi ever written in my humble opinion. And it's free.

As promised, I snagged BLINDSIGHT off Watts' website. Because for free, how can you go wrong?

Anyway, I'm frankly surprised Watts' publisher allows him to make those books available like that.

Watts is one of those authors who operates on a 'if i give my books away for free people who like them will still pay money to buy them' approach and insists that this works just fine for him (see also: Kadrey, Doctorow and a whole chunk of military sf guys in Weber's posse).

He's been doing it for years so i assume that however the money flows, he's happy with it.

Watts is a bit of an ornery cuss as well. And I think his publishers have a habit of screwing him over too. So there's that and his stated aim of getting his books out to people who may actually read them.

Taking us back to the topic (as we seem to have moved into insulting Canadians (not necessarily a waste of time!)), just bought three books - the Warlocks Shadow (new Stephen Deas even if it is YA, still good to read), Ashes of a Black Frost (last book in a trilogy by Chris Evans- reasonably reads) and the Iron Jackal (latest novel of the Ketty Jay - humourous fantasy which seems to be getting some good reviews).

I read the ones that were out around when Halo 3 came out, and they were all quite entertaining. Nothing to write home about, but it furthers the story of the games in a way that left me extremely satisfied.

I was in the thrift shop today and found the first four Dark Tower TPB's in perfect condition for $6 for the lot. I guess I'll start reading the Dark Tower series.

The ones written by Eric Nylund are fantastic, the man is underrated. The Flood is kinda meh, Contact Harvest is solid, Cole Protocol quite good and Evolutions is terrific across the board. Yet to read Cryptum and halfway through Glasslands.

Got my copy of Blood Oath today and I also stumbled upon a copy of Initiate's Trial by Janny Wurts. Beginning to think my TRP needs a bit of a rest so I can knock a few of them off of it before it grows again. (OST doesn't count cause it doesn't hit the TRP. It skips it entirely)

I wouldn't presume to tell you what to read or not read, of course, but I would think if you bailed on a book FOUR TIMES already, the fifth time won't be the charm.
