I got one of my two Amazon orders: The Séance, by John Harwood. It sounds wonderfully creepy. Now I'm just waiting for Jeff Vandermeer's Shriek to arrive, come on Amazon!

It saddens me that so many used bookstores are closing, (seriously, downtown Kingston, Ontario used to have four... now it has one) so when i pass one i try to make a purchase. This led to the following at more or less $4C/each:

Ken Scholls - Lamentation - a forum suggestion i noted once;
Peter Watts - Starfish - His Blindsight (free online) blew me away, this seems to be a similar mindfuck. Now i feel a little silly because apparently this is also online for free but hey, my $5 went to a good cause...
Peter Stross - Accelerado - my first Stross pure sf but his Cthulhu vs Nerds 'Laundry' series made my last vacation;
Brian Ruckley - Winterbirth and Bloodheir - i know, i know, but Pat liked them and i trust him, and the two together were less than the price of one new.

Amusing ref to upthread discussion - they had the first two Shadows of the Apt books, which i bypassed in favour of Ruckley.

I also spotted a copy of GotM and successfully bullied jedi'd hypnotized threatened convinced a dude in the store looking at Goodkind to buy GotM instead.

well, yes but no - the Rifters trilogy is new to me, but it predates Blindsight. And it's all online for free by the author no less, which is an uptick.

Blindsight was a serious mindfuck in a good way and i look fwd to to seeing if his earlier work has the same impact.

I've been waiting for him to publish a new book for years. I've read Blindsight more times than any other book I own apart from Faust.

Had a gift card and decided to go pick up some random new-to-me books.

Got The Darkness that Comes Before because I've heard good things about that series.

A Wizard of Earthsea for the same reason.

And then The Summoner by Gail Martin because I wanted to grab a book I didn't know anything about really, and this one seemed to be interesting as I'm kind of fiddling with the idea of a story that has necromancers playing a big part. Upon further review here I saw some ppl hated the book. Should I give it a chance, or go return it and pick up another cheap one?

Upon Wert's chronological order list for Alastair Reynold's Revelation Space series, I grabbed GALACTIC NORTH. The short stories contained within will be my very first foray into Reynold's work....and I do like a good space opera, so hopefully all the good reviews round here will be well founded.

That said, I read the first chapter of THE PREFECT today in the store and enjoyed the writing, so here's hoping...

I also just bought Bakker's first book because of all the good things I have heard. 100+ pages in and enjoying it so far.

Also, I'd give The Summoner a chance. I think the series is up to 4 books now, and I have read and enjoyed the first 3 and plan on buying the fourth sometime soon. I'd say it uses some of the usual cliches and seemed a little YA (but not that much, just some aspects), but it is interesting. Necromancers aren't that common are the hero in fantasy, afaik, and this series does that well.

Andrzej Sapkowski -- _Blood of Elves_, cos I've heard so much about it.

I bought Kate Elliot's Spirit Gate. I'm taking a chance because I've never read anything of hers but the guy at the bookstore recommended her over Anne Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy (another author who I've never read). So I guess I'll know soon enough if I wasted $10.
