Death

So with all this talk about Heath Ledger (he died) it got me to wondering about our mortality.
What do you think happens when you die? Do you believe in an afterlife? Is it crazy to look at yourself as constantly getting nearer to your own ending?
What does the future hold? Longer Lifespans? An eventual ability to prolong our lives via machinery or some sort of "soul transplant"?

I believe the world goes on without you, but our brains only experience reality while they are alive, and hence you never actually experience death, as you approach it, it shifts out to infinity (your own infinity) and your last moments last forever (your own forever).

I'm counting on conscientious organ harvesting to prolong my life.
Edit: You know, my own personal body part-replacement clone.

Maybe your oblivion/nothingness is the same as my infinity/forever?

Well...you die and tell me how that works out.
I always liked the idea from the last Rings movie.
Pippin: I didn't think it would end this way.
Gandalf: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path... One that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass... And then you see it.
Pippin: What? Gandalf?... See what?
Gandalf: White shores... and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
Pippin: [smiling] Well, that isn't so bad.
Gandalf: [softly] No... No it isn't.

When we die, we either:
Go to heaven ie: God places all of Erikson's books in front of us with a bottle of scotch.
Go to hell ie: God places all of Goodkind's books in front of us with a bottle of drain cleaner.

@Rodeo: So, you die and go to England. Except more gray and under a swift rainfall.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I'd like to think there is something after death. The idea of total oblivion..seems..boring.
Yet what about the idea of Heaven? What would it be?

It is the state of your mind during your final moments/eternity.

Lots of people would be enduring extremely unpleasant eternities.

If you mean pain, i think that as your nervous system shuts down there would be a period before your death where you couldn't feel it.

That is an interesting thought Cold Iron.
Then there is the whole reincarnation idea...which is also fascinating...but I think a lot of people want to have a means of continuing on after their corporeal body dies

The better your life, the "bigger" your soul, and when you die, you contribute more to the universal mega-soul, resulting in more "-ness" to go around...

Hmmm...so a theory of an "omni-soul" or "over-soul". Well this goes back to my whole theory that the universe is "alive", but I digress.
My dad wants me to help him write a book about this nutso theory he has about computer chips eventually "downloading" your soul and creating immortality...which I'm sure has been at least touched upon in some other type of sci-fi novel/movie...but his theory has a lot of depth to it..
Would that be possible? Guess on what the soul actually is.

Yeah they did that in the Red Dwarf series.

Alive in this sense still doesn't imply intent
Also the soul is god. It's everything. It's infinity. A computer can't download it because it's in it.

Pain isn't always physical. Nice try though.
