Well to be honest I kind of liked Lorn. She was a good character didn't really care when she died though...in fact on second thought I think I actually went "Good B***H DIE!" Posted Image But I still enjoyed her character. As for Tavore, she should burn in hell! Posted Image Posted Image Mind you she's also another character I enjoy. I don't knooooo I like all of Erikson's characters they're all so good! Besides I'm in love with all of House Paran Posted Image

Oh and...I thought that the Paran Parents died before the over throwing of all the nobels...or did I just read wrong?

Did Lorn know that Paran hadn't really betrayed her? Did the empress know that Paran hadn't really betrayed her?

Who beat her up again? My memory of these things is so hazy... I can't remember how she died.

I wouldn't worry so much about Lassen killing QB as SE!! SE's the one to watch out for! He killed off Whiskeyjack and now threatens not to bring him back after ascending him! *OK....breathe.....breathe....*

Ahem

Right, I wouldn't be surprised if Quick dies next. As for Laseen, the whore's been trying to kill them ever since. The entire series began with her efforts in just that direction. Not just Quick but all the Bridgeburners...anyone tainted by the old Emperor's service. Let's just say that Quick, Kalam etc. don't like that part of her plans.

The same whay that she wont try to kill Kalam himself, I don't expect her to try for Quick. Also, I assume she assimilated the threat that the CG poses and realises that there is a bigger picture beyond her greed for 'empire'. Whereas most of Genabackis and some other places have been annexed, the CG is one entity that wont fit neatly within the realms of her crotch. That ought to wake her up.

The people in this-here Forum cite such incidents (as I said earlier) as her speaking through the corpse to Kalam, the unnatural gloom that hosted that discussion, the fact that the Claw (an organisation formed at her behest) was initiated in sorcery...it all points to her being a mage. Kellanved was a powerful mage. Likely you'd need to be to rule the Empire.

It didn't hit me as much as other characters like Coltaine or the Bridgeburners at Pale...probably because Felisin was likeable and destable at various points. Sad though it was, I thought both Felisin and (especially) Tavore got their just deserts in the end.... but I can't forget who Felisin really is: a heartbroken little girl who was blinded by the the sudden world of violence and hurt that she was suddenly thrust into. That she died with that broken heart in the end was the real tragedy but she dished out her share of spite too. I personally can't wait for Tavore to discover what she did. So far I've not liked any of the Empress' Adjuncts. I had a particularly nasty hatred for Lorn and when she died like a stuck pig I felt a wave of satisfaction....don't like Mage-killers! As far as Lorn, knew Paran had betrayed the empire. It was said that his actions and betrayel led to Adjucnt Lorn's death. Tavore finds out when Clawmaster Topper visits her in her tent before they set out for Raraku and tells her that One Arm's Host wasn't really outlawed and that it was all a ploy to win allies. That's when Gamet thinks to himself that Felisin's sacrifice was all in vain.

I just finished and wanted to say, the ending was so sad Posted Image with Felisin dying and all and Tavore not even knowing that she killed her own sisterPosted Image...all I have to say is...WHERE WAS GANOES! Posted Image He should've done something!
But all in all, a REALLY good novel. Loved every word of it. Personally I would've prefered Tavore and Felisin making up Posted Image. <sigh> I guess you can't get everything you want in life

i think it works better with a short ending. gives it more of a tragic feeling. kind of leaves you in shock to, whereas, a long fight would prepare you for it and you would know its coming. dont think it would have been as good. I'm sure SE tried it both ways and decided with the short ending.

The meeting between tavore and Felisin/Shaik was pure tragedy! Wonderfull! Reminds me of some ancient Greek tragedy. Well done SE.

(And yeah I know about the other topic that calls the end a "let down". I just wanted to counterbalance that topic)

*edit* from my first post: I meant to say "As far as Tavore knew..." and not "As far as Lorn knew"

Thats a tough question. Lorn thought Paran was dead remember, until Ganoes shows up when she's about to die. And since Lorn would constently report to Laseen, Ganoes for officially dead to both of them.
Then after the Outlawing was confirmed and Ganoes was known to be alive, obviously rumors would've spread that it was his fauly Lorn died and stuff...folk's like to gossip lol

I think one thing that's really interesting about Felisin's death by Tavore is that it was so easy for Tavore. All through the book, Tavore's martial skills are completely untested. Gamet was in a constant state of doubt as to her abilities, and hopeful she wouldn't let everyone down.

Then the Dogslayers all get killed by the ghosts of Raraku, and Tavore only has to face Shaik, who is barely armoured, and puts up zero defence - really a slaughter.

Tavore has also been taking sword play lessons from T'amber (who the heck is she, really?), but does this prove that she is less than competent or dedicated to improving her skills? We're left doubting just like Gamet, and we likely won't find out the truth until Assail...

Well it had been there in the past. It was explained the waters just receded from Raraku's heart. I just read that as it coming back to its natural levels <shrug>

Good one! Posted Image

It seems quite likely, that Laseen is a mage of sorts. Dancer who was no mage trained the Talon to be damn good without magic. Surly trained the Claw in the ways of assassination AND magery, so she's likely both.

And unlike our undead simian friend here I don't *hate* Laseen. True, she betrayed most of her family to win the empire for herself, but IMO it's not a sure thing, that she did it out of greed. Assassins are pragmatic, not idealistic and can't let themselves be distracted by notions like greed. Like Kalam (after his talk), QB et al I believe her, when she claims to have acted in the name of the empire, not her own. For all our sympathy for Kellanved, he *was* mad. There's no debating though, that she isn't quite as clever as she thought. And her panics resulting in the near extermination of the bridgeburners is no trifling matter either. Still, I don't hate her, though I don't like a lot of things she's done. Oh the joys of relative morality ... Posted Image

You know what, I'm going to be far more dispassionate when I read SE's books from now on. Reason being, the Malazan Empire sucks. Like Rigga said: "Itko Khan was a country. We flew a banner and it was ours. We were free lass."

Damn the empire for it's predatory, imperialistic overlordly ways. And DAMN that B*TCH Laseen! Posted Image The next one of then that gets torn to mince or skewered by a pike, or putrified by the CG...well that's just karma. Laseen's always acted for empire (i.e., her own greed). She only now finds herself acting for all existence due to the CG. A matter of expedience really. People like QB, Paran, Kruppe, Baruk, etc are the ones who have true morals and genuinely pursue the bigger agenda.

Wonder what Laseen plans for the CG?

just a reply to the bad mouthing of laseen...read MoI...whiskjack's and Dujek's conversation with each other...something along the lines of "we are the malazans, come on, mortal empires aren't supposed to plan so far ahead."
THey knew they would have to take on the CG eventually, thats why they inverted the command structure. Both pale and Darujhistan (sp??) were "poor communication"
Laseen seems to have planned very far ahead for the empire and we have no idea of the atrocities kellenved committed but we don't shout at him...for all we know, he could have iniated the slaughter at Aren by the Imass

cheers

By the way i really like Kellenved...can't wait for all his planning to come to a head....what a name as well

I think Lasseen's the best thing for the empire rightnow. It might be hypothetical, but I think Kellanved purpoesedly arranged for himself to get "assasinated", I mean think about how many of the supposedly dead have turned up somewhere or the other alive, there is Kalleanved, dancer, this traveller guy, that odd keeper guy who could be one of those crust bros, maybe even Daseem will turn out somewhere. We can almost see in HOC that both dancer and Shadowthrone have no more interest in removing Laseen but their battle is now solely with other gods.
HOC's ending was superb. Felisin just dying like that, kinda makes you wonder if she should have been exposed to that fire warren aboard SILANDA, she would have been a lot stronger. TAvore might have probably broken her arm trying to hit her.
There was this thing I couldnt understand, where did all that water come from? What will happen to this shattered fragment of a warren? Also what happened to the goddess, she was chained or just butchered? Please help me out here. Of course I could read the book a second time but It would be alot easier if anyone could help.

@ Cramp

I got the impression that that was a lie fed to Dujek by Laseen and that Whiskeyjack ...

Mortal Empires aren't supposed to plan that far ahead, and they both knew it. I would assume that they both therefore realised that it couldn't be true... Whiskeyjack's POV certainly seems in contradiction to this conversation, although I can't remember which came first.

Sir Thursday
Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.
