But didn't kelvanned also cull the nobles, in fact initiating this policy. I thought the problem was that laseen had stopped culling the nobles, andb they'd taken over much of the military, and so she decided to take action, but later than she should have.

Tavore, to be fair, did try and help Felisin. Felisin, being the nasty heffa that she is, ignored the attempts to save her and just started being major b***h to everyone. Thats not Tavores fault. Then she was upset when Pearl couldn't find Felisin. I think there's life in old Tabore yet. The very fact she wanted to do it under the nose of the empress was something.
Lorn however did deserve everything she got.

The Laseen thing was a particularly bitter moment. Posted Image

quote:
Perhaps Paran, when he fully realises his powers could do something. Perhaps in revenge for what she did to his family.

No chance of that TS.....there'll no doubt be talk of some INFURIATINGLY lofty notions of duty and the wider scheme of things. Forsooth even Laseen will have been found to be playing a valuable role. Yea, upon reading it my brain will do its final summersault into madness Posted Image. I'm telling you, since I've begun reading this series my conscience and my logic have been confounded by SE's wily notions of 'comeuppance'. Somehow you're lead to believe what doesn't exist by your conscience....only to read later (or discover from one of the pundits on this-here Forum) that SE logic dictates otherwise.

How else can there be differing opinions of that murderous harlot among sane individuals such as us???....we're being manipulated, I tell you!! Posted Image Think Oponn or Dancer were bad?

Whatever motivated Laseen to take the throne cannot excuse the atrocities she committed while on it. Think of the notion of 'culling' the nobility, for example. Good heavens!! I'm a 'lefty' myself but I wouldn't advocate murdering women and children just by virtue of their caste. Imagine what Tayschrenn would have done if Dujek hadn't burned down the Hall of Records. And throughout there's that familiar stain: he was following the Empress' orders. Much as I'd love to hear of some of the nobles on Coltaine's Chain dangling from their eyelashes over a bed of spikes, still there was one (and he had friends) who disagreed with the greed of the others. Then there's Aren, the Bridgeburners....how many lives??

Ohh....and sorry guys. Numerical stumble...I did mean 12.

I enjoyed the denying of expectations, the sudden feint and removal of the battle. That is what makes SE stand alone and not just slip into the ranks of the genre. His books are always challenging on several levels, not being able to predict what happens is the best.

You're right Folken...that line was a heart-breaker. Know what....at the end of the day, these Adjuncts are prepared to sell their granny's eyes if Laseen ordered it. Yet we are supposed to respect 'noble Tavore'...why, because she sacrificed her family to save them. I don't get it....she administrates not just the massacre but the BRUTAL massacre of so many nobles (of which she was one...and we certainly don't hear of her working with the Salvation Army at the weekends; no doubt she was having very expensive sword lessons) and we're supposed to admire her????? Look what she did to her sister! Her parents! Wonderful irony it is that both Laseen and Tavore created Shaik.

And Lorn was the bigger hypocrite...all those she murdered on the Empress' orders, yet she would get all emotional with Tattersail....resurrecting her personal grudge against the one of the only 2 survivors against Moons Spawn. They succeeded in mauling Moons Spawn where her mage-killing ottataral sword could not....how I wish she'd met Rake and Dragnipur Posted Image ........Mage killer!!!! Posted Image Posted Image

Tavore will find out, she must! It will be a grand scene methinks.
Felisin annoyed the heck out of me, so when she died I didn't really feel that sad... though now you've put it in that light MO...

@graller

I didn't read it that way. I took it as though she had never reflected back on the times with Beneth until the Whirlwind Goddess left her as she entered Heboric's tent. The Goddess was stripped away and she finally had the perspective to realize how badly Beneth had used and mistreated her. She'd been on the run for her life nearly up until the Goddess took her in Raraku in Deadhouse Gates; the last time she'd felt safe was with Beneth.

A very human post-traumatic stress reaction, and well written too, IMHO.

Anyhoo, my $0.02.

some really good posts in here...
I personally think that Felisin was a great character, but would not like her as a person. She didn't try to understand the efforts of those around her and was always resisting, meanwhile I would hate silverfox as a person, seeing as she became an arrogant self centered seeming person in my eyes, despite her grand designs to help everyone in the end. She also was a good character despite her personality failings.
I think that the fact that Erikson can evince feelings for these generally disliked characters at the ends of the books and really make us wonder why we have left on that foot whilst starting on the other foot is a good show of his talent at storytelling... jerking our emotions around into some sort of emotional "big picture" ... *shrugs*

I thought that the tragic part was great as well... in a sad way...
I did feel that a big battle could have been really interesting.. but that is besides the point (in my opinion).

QB is far from being the most powerful mage in the straight forward meaning of the word - someone like Tayshrenn has a lot more "brute" magical power but lacks QB's cunning and diversity.
I don't think Laseen has ever wanted to get rid of the Bridgeburners. Whiskeyjack - yes, she saw him as a threat to her power but why should she bother with his soldiers? I think WJ realised that in MOI - that he was the target, not the BB. In GotM it sure looked as if the Empress wanted them dead but probably SE changed his mind afterwards.
I stil think that the whole emnity between Laseen and Kellanved is some kind of sham and they are working together on achieving something grandiose.

Weirdly enough, Felisin is my absolute favourite character in the series so far, and Karsa my absolute least favourite. Towards the end of HoC, I was practically suffering from emotional split personality syndrome - I wanted the Malazans to win, but I REALLY wanted Felisin to get her revenge, too.

I kind of loved the ending. It was sad, and ironic, and... strangely satisfying...

Hahaha, the joys of spontaneous posting! I reckon Lasseen is alright, but it would be nice to see QB or Kalam kick her about the place. I reckon Kalam could give her a run for her money, even though she was like the original claw. That line in DG - "Even Dancer would have thought about it before taking on Kalam" Ooh, it sends shivers down my spine! (Not a direct quote, it has come straight from memory!)

I still don't like Felisin though... Tavore seemed to be one of those people who was all about me. (Well, not ME but herself. I was kinda talking from her perspective for a second there...)
Everything she does is self motivated and for her further gains. Thats why I loved it when we saw that little part of her that still cared - "I want you to find my sister" - Beautiful.

Theres probably not much she can do to the CG. I mean she isn't even a sorceror is she? She'll probably have to come crawling to the old faithful, like QB, to get them to help her. If I were them I'd make her squirm before I agreed to go and kick CG around for a bit.

I thought the ending was very good, a change from the previous books. A good move IMO by Erikson.

I agree with what StoneSnake said about not liking Fesilin, esp in DG. In HOC she was a bit more likeable though.

Nah, Felisin was quite all right. So was Silverfox.

I liked the end very much, I had really expected that Tavore would bit the dust and that she'd see Felisin. I wonder if she'll ever know what she did.

Funny, I liked Felisin and despised Silverfox... probably because I feel Deadhouse Gates is by far stronger than Memories of Ice. Ah well...

Anyway, totally agree. Erikson has said that he has a certain style of weaving storylines to a huge climax, and although a ton of stuff happens, it is brilliantly anti-climactic, particularly compared with the insanity that is the end of MOI.
