Im not sure if I let it get by me, or if it just wasnt made clear. I know that Bottle was sent into the city to bring him to the ships, but why? Im pretty sure we get his name, but I can't remember it, and I have no idea why he is worth the slaughter his retrieval required. Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, I didnt see it. My first post here!

It's Withal, the blacksmith from MT who made Rhulad's cursed sword.
Fiddler notes his arms, which bear the scars of a blacksmith. And his strange accent is the reason he is called Foreigner - Withal is a Meckros from an unknown region, presumably one the Malazans haven't had much (or any) contact with. I think there are other pointers in his dialogue or the observations of others.

As for why he is worth the slaughter of his retrieval, well, *we* know he's important because we know he made Rhulad's sword and whatnot, but they don't go into many details as to why Tavore thinks he's important (though she's often shown that she knows more then she lets on, anyway)

The fact that he introduces himself as Withal when he boards the Adjunct's ship is something of a giveaway.
A typically subtle clue from Erikson, but one from which the truth can be gleaned, when you collate it with his accompanying Sandalath Drukorlat and three Nachts. Though it takes patience to unravel, with so little information.

Hmm. That's weird--after two rereads, I still thought Foreigner was Cartheron Crust.
I guess I didn't make the connection between the scars.

Well, Cartheron Crust (Captain from DG) turned up in BH too, so it's hard to mistake him for Foreigner.

That's what I mean. For some reason I thought it was him that was showing up at Coop's, all while waiting for the fit to hit the shan with his crew. Or maybe I'm just confused and used to think that but then was surprised when it turned out to be Withal.
