Here’s another one that really impressed me. Written by artist extraordinaire Wayne Barlowe, “God’s Demon” is influenced by Milton’s “Paradise Lost” and his own artbooks Barlowe’s Inferno (1998) & Brushfire: Illuminations from the Inferno (2001), and is basically an epic fantasy tale set in Hell. So you have such familiar elements as a hierarchy between lords & peasantry, war, court politics, a magic system, good guys/bad guys and other common themes, but what makes them stand out is the hellish backdrop. As far as the writing, I’m pretty sure this is Barlowe’s first actual novel, and in that regard, he’s pretty impressive. His strengths definitely lie in his descriptive abilities, his imagination and writing intense action scenes. Characters are a bit shallow and the plot is fairly straightforward with little surprises, but these issues don’t take away from the book’s enjoyment, at least for me
Overall I’d say Wayne Barlowe’s writing reminded me of David Anthony Durham’s “Acacia”. Regarding the book as a whole, I really enjoyed it and was surprised by how emotional, heroic and uplifting it was despite the setting. Anyways, as always, I’m interested to hear what other people think about it and hope that readers will check it out. Thanks and much love & respect!
