I'm about halfway through TBh. What warren/realm were they in before they crossed the bridge over the mists? I got the impression that that was a border of Hood's realm (but maybe not, now that I think of it because I don't think Hedge ended up in Hood after all). The discussion by Ganath, of building upon the layers of the past, implied that Hood's realm of Death was built upon an elder realm of Death. This added to my belief that they were in a border of Hood.

Then they cross the bridge and they are in the Nascent (sp?) What we know from previous books to the the (largest?) fragment of the shadow realm. So this confused be a bit, I would not have thought that Shadow was an elder Death realm. Did I miss something? or is this explained later?

Simple. They weren't in the Nascent.

Two possible explanations:

a) The Hound Statues are present in more than one warren. (In the Nascent, only two were active, in the BH one, all were). This is a similar deal to all manner of things appearing in the Shadow warren while their "true" location is elsewhere.

B) Onrack and Trull left the Nascent before they reached the Hound Statues in HoC.

I lean towards (a), but I'm not sure if there is definitive proof either way. I certainly do not think the environments in which the Hound Statues were found in HoC & BH were the same.

According to HoC, only a) is viable since the statues were in the Nascent (I felt the need to look it up). As for only two being active statues, Paran explains that in his POV in BH that the two hounds of shadow had gone past or near the statues once they were released from the sword.

I suppose the "shadow" statue idea is a possibility. It really seemed like he was making connections with the nascent though, becuase they mention several times it looks like there has been a flood, it smells of decay (presumably becuase of things killed in flood), and other things along those lines.

Granted, that's not exactly definitive.

My impression was that the bridge itself was the forgotten death realm, although that doesn't really fit with Hedge's comment about "Hood's own Hood-forsaken realm." I guess my question then is whether the bridge represents a different realm from the flooded non-Nascent realm where the statues were destroyed.

I thought that they were in the Nascent, too, given the statues and the flooding, and they went there just because that's where Paran needed to go.

Before there were Holds there was... "wandering"

Now think of how a bridge, and nothing but a bridge, applies to that!

Well wandering implies migration without destination. Bridge necessitates a starting point and an ending point. So I'm not sure about what you are getting at. A bridge is a span... presumably the only way you can get from one place to another.

Perhaps you are suggesting the place across the bridge is the elusive Death Hold, but where are the denizens?

Otherwise I'm clueless
