@ Wert: I think that a lot of people, myself included, feel that GRRM's slow progress on ASOIAF is due, in part, to having too many irons the fire.

I don't begrudge him his hobbies/side projects, but we readers are an impatient lot. It's not insane to think that he might be able to focus a little harder on finishing ASOIAF or, at least, ADWD, without the added distractions.

That said, he's turned out nothing but quality so far. If it takes a little distraction to keep Westeros fresh for George, so be it.

Wild Cards has been an ongoing project since 1987. GRRM worked on it before ASoIaF and inbetween all of the previous books of the series as well as now. His contribution to the recent Hunter's Run was written in 1981. The bulk of his work on Warriors and Tales of the Dying Earth will be done after ADWD is finished and will take a few weeks at best (editing is really easy when you've got profressional authors like Robin Hobb and Tad Williams working for you).

As a writer myself, I know how difficult it can sometimes be to write. It's not an easy thing on occaison, and so I must fully understand the time he takes to finish each book. It may be a long time, and he may lose fans (though I doubt it), but in the long run they are HIS books, and those of you who are the complainers that "waaaaa waaa waaaa he takes too long to finish them"......belt up.

....unless you'd like to write them instead?

There are literally thousands of other books to occupy your time until he releases ADWD....and I bet you that even if it takes another two years to get it out....those people who claim to be fed up, will STILL shell out the coin to buy it...so...like I said, belt up.

I think SFF bloggers love GRRM because he's accessible. And, I think, he sounds pretty personable.

Oh I understand. I'm not a published writer but I'd love to be. I'm not saying I don't understand why he takes a long time, it just seems annoying how he gets so crotchety about people wanting to read his stuff. Without his fans, he'd be a normal 9-5 joe.

I know he gets annoyed with some of those zealots who repeatedly ask him when it will be published, but it comes with the territory.

Being a successful writer is akin to being a sports star. Lots of us have talent. Very few will ever reach the ranks of published authors, let alone giants of a genre (GRRM, SE). This is common knowledge.

On the same note, it's 5% talent, 95% hard work. Athletes are expected to perform, writers are expected to publish, something Martin doesn't do with any consistency.

I'd like to reiterate that I'm not a Martin Hater. And concerning Wert's post, all of GRRM's signings, tours, meticulous attention to detail with his other works has taken time away from aSoIaF.
