I don't think most readers were especially shocked by Snape's revelation, so much as the reasons and details behind it. It was brick-to-the-facefully obvious in HALFBLOOD PRINCE that there was more going on at the end than just Snape executing Dumbledore... and while the "PLEASE, Severus!" thing might have misled some to think Dumby was begging for his life, he had just chugalug'd a vat of poison on top of everything else.
