Im sorry if this isnt the right place for the thread.. It is GOTM.. and i dont think we need to discuss any other book... but ya! please move if I put it in the wrong place.

K.. I know Baruk has been discussed in the passed as a possible Ascendent...

Quote

Baruks smile was wry. "Why would you think me anything but?"
Now it was Rakes turn to smile."There are few who would argue with me without flinching. I am unused to being addressed as an equal."
"There are many paths to ascendancy, some more subtle than others" (lost page #.. sorry)

But has anyone discussed where he gains his power from? In GOTM... Orr sees Baruks mask... and guesses what his influence was... and I dont know any warren/power that fits the mask... Can someone help?

The alchemist's mask was a conservative silver-inlaid half-shield that no more than covered his eyes. An obvious statement denying duplicity. Turban Orr grunted, knowing well that his suspicions about the alchemist's influence and power were accurate. pg 609 GOTM (at the start of the Fete)

1) So is does he somehow draw his power from the Moon? Theres the refrence to 'Moons Tears' being the new year of the Fete, and Moon Spawn is over the city. The only other time the moon was used was in another book... but as far as I can tell, completely unrelated, and not simular.

2)or is some type thing to represent a sheild anvil? I got no evidence... but the 1/2 shield...

Please Comment everyone! I need help with this one...

Can't comment in this forum. Sorry.

The mask is not a clue to his power. It's what Orr thinks it is, a statement about Baruk's status. Orr is not guessing Baruk's influence from the mask, he is already well aware that the Alchemist is a powerful man and the mask has nothing to do with that.

The only clue to Baruk's warren comes when he fights Vorcan - and uses lightning magic. The closest warren I can see to that is Serc, the path of the sky. But that's the closest we get to identifying it. The type of magic that Baruk uses actually appears to be a GotMism - characters are never observed manipulating doors, windows or other objects via magic alone in the later books. Either that's a habit only Baruk indulges in (unlikely) or it's a brand of sorcery the author abandoned for the rest of the series.

The name of the new year - Moon's Tears - doesn't have anything to do with Baruk. As you say, that's about Rake and his floating mountain.

I have to give you credit for this one, but revealing why involves an utterly minor RG spoiler:

It might be a habit that only Serc mages indulge in. I mean, Warren of the Sky, having control of air - sounds like the perfect warren for closing windows, changing the channel when the remote batteries are dead, and getting a beer out the fridge.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Illuyankas, you have a point there.
And could it be that Orr was referring to political power? Granted, it seems that Baruk is powerful magically and intellectually but that's the impression i got.

EDIT: oops, i just now realize dolorous said much the same thing. glad to see someone agrees though

Remember that Kruppe does the same thing -- does he use this warren as well? He "telekeneses" food and goodies in the scene with him being followed through the market square before the Fete

That's right, it lends weight to that "style" being more of a GotMism.

I guess you're refering to Mockra. It's kinda hard to say what you meant. Anyhow, a mage can use more than one warren, though it appears somewhat complicated and rare. It also appears that a certain warren can be used for different purposes - for example, you can counjure shadows with Meanas, but you can also use it in a more general way. To kill someone.
Kif: Sir, remember your course correction?
Captain Zapp: No.
Kif: Well, it's proving somewhat more suicidal than we'd initially hoped.
