Last one for the night: the eventful night in Malaz City, it's mentioned at least twice that Grub 's jumped overboard to meet with three friends in a cave. Do we ever find out what that was all about? I assume it wasn't the Withal crew, because they were hanging out at that bar ...

I don't think we're supposed to know - who is there on Malaz Island who could fit the role? I suspected Telorast and Curdle, since he showed up with them later, but don't know what third they'd have accompanied, or why they're associated with those particular cards.

Maybe some of the Night of Knives crew, except they're all accounted for later.

The three bird-vulture things that lived with Withal on the CG's island in MT. They kept on building nests and breaking them down, and Withal finally got the message and knocked down the CG's tent.

I suppose they are candidates for the "three friends" because

a) there were three of them
:) Withal is in Malaz City, so maybe they were too
c) ...that's about it

I'm skeptical about whether it was actually them.

There is no doubt as to their presence in Malaz City: When Grub leads Lostara through the city, she senses their presence. They are among the first to climb onto Tavore's ship after Crust delivers the troupe. Fiddler (or someone) even comments on how he doesn't like nachts.

I must've missed that. It must be them then.

not really a big deal, but they're not bird-vulture things. they're more akin to muscle bound bhokaral. at least that's how they're described in MT.

That's how I remember them, too. Bit monkeyish.
Get to the chopper!
