I have a question about the book MOI, I didnt finish it yet, but I keep wondering and I dont understand why the Mortal Sword of Fenner commited 'suicide' with a bunch of Grey Swords. I think Im missing something

Their priest betrayed them. He knew they were all going down eventually anyways, but with out that obvious betrayal and the mortal sword's sacrifice, the priest would have gotten away with it. ...and as he said, he knew the shield anvil would avenge them and dish out the proper punishment to the priest.

That was my take on it anyways.

I've only just finished the book and am starting House of Chains later today.

Also, this may be a spoiler for you, I can't remember when it was revealed to the Grey Swords in MoI, but maybe not because we knew it from book 2. I'm just not sure if the Mortal Sword knew it at that time or not:


That Fener was gone and stuck on the mortal world. So even if they made it threw, their god was gone.

I also had a theory that maybe Brukhalian handed himself over to Hood, seeing as the god came for him personally. I got shot down the last time i suggested this, so take it as you wish.
It's just a thought.

Brukhalian knew there was a trap set by the priest. He also knew that, without his death, Itkovian would not be able to take revenge on Rath'Fener.

So he willingly led his men to their deaths, so that Itkovian could later pass judgement on the priest. This seems strange, but the Grey Swords really believed in their martial code shtick, so I suppose it made perfect sense to Brukhalian.

yeah i was thinking why sacrifice so many people, just to punish one. But like you said their strick martial code. Too bad tough i liked that mortal sword character!

Well, as far as Brukhalian was concerned they were all dead anyway, so it was just a matter of choosing the manner of their death. Doing one's duty even in the face of betrayal seemed appropriate, but comfort was also taken in the fact that the betrayal would in turn be repaid. Reciprocity...

It's not suicide if there's no alternative to dying.
