Another good book I read this summer. I think the format of the book, from main story to flashback short stories. However the book's dark side got to me and I was pretty gloomly after reading. Still trying to get my sister to read it.

That's good news, seeing that the others of the books will be published. I first heard about him (hangs head in shame) through the computer game inspired by it, and having read around a bit about Sapkowski it seems VERY interesting.
(Sighs) I hate waiting for translations, though. I'm cursed with impatience, so I hate ordering books, but many book stores in my area (at least, those that are close/easily accessible) don't seem to get the other translated works timely enough.
I'm still fucking waiting impatiently to get my hands on Lukyanenko's Final Watch while cursing my local Borders...

Hi.
Just finished reading this. Read in 2 days which is very quick for me. IMO it's brilliant and up there with Erikson & Donaldson
Gonna start Blood of Elves tonight.
Recommended to all.

Didn't discover this thread until now..
Well, I definitely recommend Sapkowski! Not the huge confusing fantasy books, where you can kill somebody with just one volume if you get what I mean, but a fun and witty read with interesting and well developed characters and a lot of turning cliches upside down. And it gets better with the novels that follow after the shortstories.
I read all volumes in russian several times and loved them every time. First time was when I was 11, though. My first fantasy books
But I STILL love them, now that I actually get the fun of these books, even more.

In case anyone is interested, there has been a videogame adaptation of The Witcher out in the last few years by a Polish company called CD Projekt. I thought it was pretty fantastic, and they released an Ultimate addition that ironed out a lot of the bugs and stuff.
It's an action-type RPG for the PC, with Geralt leveling up as you do quests, and yo8u have to time attacks and cast spells on your own. The graphics were pretty stupendous. I think it was based chronologically after the short stories, because Geralt was already kind of a legendary character. The story was pretty good, especially for a videogame. I saw some news recently that CD Projekt is converting it to XBOX 360 and PS3.
I knew they were working on an English translation of the stories, and now they are ready so I can check them out!

There are even a movie and a TV-series based on the shortstories, but most people seem to prefer to pretend they don't exist. Both are old and the special effects cheap as hell.
Haven't watched the series, but I DO like the movie, whatever people say, though it's probably gonna get me stoned to death one day.

I got my hands on the novel series (in Russian) recently
and powered my way through the 6 books in a week.
my thoughts are all in the "Reading at t' moment" thread, but I can add that it's a pretty damn interesting story with some nice characters, and the pace is pretty strong throughout the series, can't think of a particularly weak spot.

been out since New Year, I believe, actually.
sucks that they skipped "Sword of destiny" though, it could cause a lot of confusion for ppl reading Blood of the Elves...

The game led me to the book. The game is excellent.
Have since downloaded the tv series, which is basically what the movie was cut down from.
Watched first two episodes and enjoying it so far
oh, and blood of elves is good so far!

Was there a book/more shortstories before Blood of Elves orginially ?
Could explain why I found it so poor compared to the first one perhaps...
/Chance...still hoping the third one will be great like the first

Yes, the series should be
The Last Wish
Sword of Destiny [or a similar title]
Blood of Elves
etc.
Don't tell me, it is really true that the second book wasn't translated to english, that would suck

yeah, Sword of Destiny's pretty crucial to understanding wtf's going on in BoE.
since the novels are written a bit deiiferently from the short stories, Sword of Destiny is a necessary bridge between the two.
VERY stupid decision on the publisher's part, imho.
EDIT: otherwise, the big picture doesn't start clicking together till like book 4 or 5
