I'm with you on that one Illy! I may just have to start a bonfire for the whole thing, if that comes about! It would be a great way for Rothfuss to completely ruin what's shaping up to be a great series!

There are a few more compariosons I could probably come up with, that's just two off the top of my head. I'm not saying the books are exactly the same. Plus imo Rothfuss is a much better writer that JKR. I haven't read the Dresden Files so I can't really comment on the similarities between the two. You've got good tast though so I'll take your word for it! :p

True, but I think that's more a case of them both reading from the same Big Book of Fantasy Cliche. Stylistically they're very different, and as I say, in terms of plot NotW is very similar to A Wizard of Earthsea, to the point where it sometimes reads like a remake, especially in the University parts.
:p But you need to read the Dresden Files. I suspect Butcher writes using ink made of Cocaine, Nicotine and Pringles- it's that addictive. >_>

I read this when it first came out and really, really enjoyed it, for all its little flaws, it was a very good read and I am quite looking forward to the sequel....Fall 2009 ain't too far away, hopefully they get it out by then. At any rate, I'll need to re-read it before Wise Man's Fear comes out.

I've just picked this up, along with 1st Dresden Files - I'm off on holiday at the end of next week, and I need a new series or two to start...

I'll post back here when I'm done!
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Pray tell, out of curiosity... what else has my amazing taste led you to? Apart from Thunderer?

Also, read Twilight. It's amazing. :p

Twilight?! And this after I compliment you on you taste in books :p ( I know you're only joking....right?)

Um so far you've led me to Richard Morgan and Terry Pratchett just to name two authors of the top of my head. You had alot of good suggestions for me when I first joined the board and mentioned I hadn't read any Terry Pratchett, it was really helpful! There have been a few other's I'm sure but can't recall atm.

I thought that he had all 3 books already written from what he said in an interview when TNotW was released?

I read something recently (sorry, can't source it) that said he was rewriting because he thought what he had written was leaning too far YAish.

I think we can safely qualify this as a Big Fat Lie, hugely overhyped by the publishing company in their marketing in a move which has backfired spectacularly.

I've only just read this, and I liked it a lot. I thought it was very well written; even if some elements can be compared to other stories, the style and believable characters made it seem fresh.

Hope the next two are as good.

I just finished it, I was spurred on to buy it after reading blog artcle that was linked from the DoD section of these boards re: release dates and so on. I enjoyed the blog enough that I thought that I'd read the book and I'm glad I did.

Whilst there were a few awkward moments I've got to say I was pretty impressed, particularly for a debut novel. There were times when it was nothing short of spellbinding and I'll be looking forward to the second whenever it does drop :3

now off to read the thoughts of other people =p

I just bought it and finished it in about 2 days while I was on my vacation and it was pretty good. It was a tad slow, and not exactly action filled but it's an interesting story that definitely gets you hooked. I'm pumped to read the next one whenever it comes out, good entertaining book, imo.

This is the funniest thing I've ever read on Amazon. A bunch of 6-7 people don't like the book, have decided it's overhyped, so have unleashed a storm of 1-star reviews decrying it.

According to them, apparently every single one of the 500+ positive reviews on Amazon was written by Rothfuss himself and he is guilty of mass fraud and should be reported to the Amazon Police.

You could not make this shit up.

Oh man, that is so funny! I can't figure it out though.....are those 3 or 4 people decrying it SO vehemently opposed to it that they feel like holding up signs saying don't buy this book? I mean, if roughly 500 people thought enough of it to write 4 and 5 star reviews on amazon, doesn't that mean they are in the serious minority and should just shut their yaps? That Kathryn chick is dumber than a bag of wet hair. Hahaha. What a joke.

LOL these people are stupid as hell. If I wasn't so lazy I'd make an account and let them know why they're stupid. I love how the Kathryn woman keeps saying how bad it is, but never offers up why she thinks it's so bad. God, stupid people are stupid. XD

Haha, some people are ridiculous. How the hell could Rothfuss recruit 500 family and friends (as if he'd know that many anyway) and convince them to write glowing reviews of his book? No one is that egocentric. Why, if they hated it so much, would they repeatedly bash it on his Amazon page? I hate Twilight, but you don't see me leading an anti crusade on Amazon. Idiots...other than say repeatedly the writing is piss-poor and it reads like a adult Harry Potter, they didn't have anything valid to say about it, and are nothing more than trolls. Damn hilarious to read though :killingme:

I think they are the same person using alts. One of them makes a comment and then another swings by a few minutes later and goes, "Hail to the truth brother!" and then the third comes along for a bit of "High fivez!" And to cannily head off claims of this, they then accuse every single person who disagrees with them of being Rothfuss under different alts!

This is awesome in its ludicrousness.
